Child benefit claw back, anyone knowledgeable about?

DH has just done tax return, totally PAYE, no other income apart from CB. He earns 61k, so I assumed we'd pay back £100. They've asked for £899 and I just can't make it out....any tax geniuses about to advise? Do we have to just pay it? Of course there is no one available in HMRC 😣

Normally it asks how much you have been paid and you enter that amount - not sure why it’s confusing - have they changed it?

Longsight2019 · 30/12/2025 19:53

Not enough info to be able to advise accurately.

Does he get any benefits in kind such as a company car?

£61k with no other benefits would mean he would have his tax code adjusted to repay 5% of the total CB received within that return’s tax year. That’s because for every £2k earned betweeen £60-£80k you pay back 10% until the upper £80k limit.

How long has he early £61k for?

How many children were you claiming for?
Has he filled in the claim properly?

bluechilli47 · 30/12/2025 20:02

Not an expert but remember to include any pension contributions on the tax return and if you claim the full tax relief.

IceIceSlippyIce · 30/12/2025 20:04

I'd guess you've filled in something wrong - probably ticked or not ticked a box somewhere.

BUT did DH contribute to a pension? Are his taxable earnings over 60k??

I'd start by working out (roughly) what you think you need to repay, then check the tax return and amend until the repayment matches what you think.

Duckingpondlake · 30/12/2025 21:05

Thanks all, pension contributions are taken at source, CS pe sion, no private pension outside of that.
We've both completed it with great care, and ensured all boxes are ticked correctly.
No BIK, claiming for 2 children.

How long has he been earning that though? The child benefit limit changed fairly recently so if he’s earned that for a while it may be to recoup from previous years?

MrsSPenguins · 30/12/2025 21:29

Does he have a lot of savings interest or money from another source like property or a bonus?

LokeyCokey · 30/12/2025 21:36

That sounds about right, for the next tax year I’ll have gone over the 60k threshold and I used the online calculator so know I’ll need about £900 put aside to repay… also claiming 2 children

But OPs dh is only £1K over the threshold so should pay back much less than you

Helpel · 30/12/2025 22:00

Nope doesn’t sound right if it’s the first year he’s earning 61k and doesn’t have any back pay. I earn 65k which is 25% into the payback bracket. We claim 2k child benefit and therefore have to pay back £500.
