Why, at 58 years old, do I still cry at ET?

Just been bawling my eyes out watching ET for approx the 1456th time since it came out in 1982. I kind of wonder if it's the nostalgia of it and the memories of going to the cinema in Glasgow with my friends to see it aged 15. Such a simple, happy time in my life. Lots of silliness, hanging about record shops, the Pancake Place in Union Street. Chips on the train home.

I often feel like this about films or songs from the 80s, I can't be the only one like this surely? 😊

Because you are human.

Same reason my 58 year old husband still bawls his eyes out at Marley & Me.

He's a total melt, bless him! 🤣

Both those films make me cry - you are normal!

I haven’t watched ET since seeing it for the first time when I was 5 because it made me cry. I’m now 40 and refuse to watch it.

I just associate the 80s with being in my teens and the 90s in my twenties. And no camera phones. 😂

Same. In fact it gets worse with every viewing.

Crying isn't age dependent. I never cried at ET though, or Marley and Me.

It's a Wonderful Life, and The Green Mile, and Ghost, and Titanic (The Kate & Leo one,) always get me though. 😢

Nostalgia for 'ye older days' and you subconsciously know you're going to cry. Plus it's supposed to make you cry!

I literally just came in and watched the last scenes - with the ‘ouch’ and the dog running up the ramp, and I felt my eyes pricking. I am in my 60s.

It is a really well made film, and so charming.

Fun fact about ET (which shows what a fantastically creative director Spielberg is):
It was shot in chronological order, which isn't the norm at all, so when kids cry at the end, they were really crying, because they grew emotionally attached to their mates, to the storyline and to the crew in general. It was genuinelly emotional for them and it showed on film. And no, they weren't traumatised. That trick also helped them understanding the storyline and it made the whole filming experience easy for them.

Amazing film.
