Lost Passport / Royal Mail

PassportPanicFuuuck · 30/12/2025 15:26

Through a series of mishaps I have lost my passport. This should have been delivered to me by Royal Mail, recorded delivery, but all that turned up was an empty envelope.

I need to fly home the day after tomorrow and do not have a driving licence, nor am I anywhere near a passport office.

Does anyone have any advice or bright ideas?

Also I assume I'm going to have to shell out for a new passport, unless anyone knows any different?

Thanks.

What nationality passport, what country are you in and which country is “home” that you need to fly to?

ChronicallyMum · 30/12/2025 16:50

Yeah you’re screwed. Worst case scenario someone has stolen your passport and could use it for identity fraud purposes.

Best case it just got lost somehow.

First step would be to contact the passport office, explain the situation.
Is the same day service something you could do? I believe it’s around £128 and they have locations in London and Peterborough.

dementedpixie · 30/12/2025 16:57

You cant usually do same day service if the passport is lost. Best to contact the passport office and see what they suggest

Sorry, should have said: domestic flight in UK.

Train or bus instead?
Without photographic ID I'm not sure you could fly

I have photographic ID, just not something "official".

It may well come to that, but unfortunately I'm at the opposite end of the country to where I live.

Provisional?

dementedpixie · 30/12/2025 20:54

What is the ID?
You wont be able to fly without photo ID
Some airlines require the ID to be a passport

Work pass with photo.

Am so angry. The whole point of getting it sent was so as not to be in this position, and now not only am I worried about not being allowed to board the plane but I also have to replace my sodding passport. I'd have been better of if I'd just done nothing.

I fly UK domestic weekly. I have never been asked to show ID let alone a passport.

Who are you flying with?

dementedpixie · 31/12/2025 08:55

Who was sending the passport to you? Had the envelope been opened/damaged? Can they claim against royal mail?

Clearinguptheclutter · 31/12/2025 08:57

If you’re not flying Ryanair I think you will be ok. Especially with some sort of work ID. My late aunt flew from Scotland to England with a library card. And when I went to see her I didn’t show anything at all, I know you’re supposed to have it

Clearinguptheclutter · 31/12/2025 08:59

worst case scenario you’ll need to get a train and get a replacement passport later

BringBackCatsEyes · 31/12/2025 09:00

You shouldn’t have to pay for another one if the service you paid for (recorded delivery) didn’t deliver.

This.
Your missing passport is annoying but it’s not urgent.

BA so I realise Ryanair, Easyjet or a non domestic carrier may have different rules but LHR T5 or London City to any mainland airport I travel to and from weekly and although I always have a passport with me I’ve never had to show it. And that’s been the same for 8 years.

Itsallovernow23 · 31/12/2025 12:55

I flew last week and wasnt asked for id. Easyjet.

blankcanvas3 · 31/12/2025 12:58

Ryanair require ID but you should be fine with any other carrier without ID

Wow, I'm really surprised that you don't need to show any form of ID. It doesn't give me a lot of confidence in our security systems.

Slothey · 31/12/2025 13:06

I’ve flown domestically with ID in my legal name, when my flight was booked in my professional name. I think that was BA.

Using work ID is of those things that would worry the hell out of me, but I’d risk if I didn’t have another option.

Everyone’s luggage is scanned in the usual way so I’m not sure how it’s any less safe

The person is already in the UK so has no requirement to show they should be here. Luggage is still scanned and you still go through security.

Dunno....I suppose I still associate any sort of flying with having lots of security. I guess it's like getting a bus though.
