Can police decide to arrest people after they have closed an investigation

I was reported to the police about something after an argument with said person to me we were both mutually to blame. However she was the instigator of it all. I then made a police report as I wanted my side to be recorded especially as she’s likely to start more problems in the future. I’m worried now I’ve made a police report if they do speak to her I’m worried she will try and push for me to be arrested. I have no criminal record so obviously don’t want one especially from something so ridiculous. Can she ask the police to arrest if they have already decided that “words of advice” was enough and I haven’t done anything else since.

It is the police who decide to arrest someone or not and the CPS who decide whether to prosecute someone or not. Despite a lot of people talking about 'pressing charges' this isn't a thing. The police can change their minds and arrest someone if they think it is warranted.

Yes and investigation can be reopened if new information comes to light but it's the CPS who must decide if there are grounds for prosecution

No one can ask the police to arrest anyone, that's their decision to make. If the investigation is closed then it will take new information to make them reopen it.

The police are not going to arrest someone just because a member of the public wants them to.

What sort of “arguement” was it, that it would be arrest worthy? People aren’t arrested for having differences of opinion.

BeeCucumber · 28/12/2025 14:25

CPS won’t do anything unless they think there is a realistic chance of a conviction.

What were the police involved for? Was it a physical altercation or just an argument? It's unlikely the police would arrest you unless new information comes to light after they spoke to you. They don't make a charging decision, it has to go to the CPS.

Tbh I would be happy with them not talking to her as I don’t think it needed police involvement but I do want it fairly recorded in case she starts anything at a later datex

You attacked her?

You attacked her?

No she attacked me and I retaliated which I obviously shouldn’t have done and I don’t normally hit people but I have quite a deep hatred of her.
