Hurt my ankle...should I get it checked?

Hi all,
We were walking down a hill today and there was a metal pole around 5 inches sticking out of the ground. I didn't see it and fell onto it (well my ankle did). I heard a crack...although that could be the sound of it hitting my bone (it happened fast).
It was agony, I was crying with pain. It subsided a bit and I managed to hobble to thr car with my brothers help.

I can minimally bare some weight on it but I cant turn or twist my ankle at all. Its swollen on my ankle bone, no bruising as of yet. I have a pins and needles sensation in my foot and halfway up my leg.

Is it worth popping to minor injuries tomorrow to get it checked? I dont want to waste their time for a minor sprain. Also as I am able to put a small amount of weight on it, im thinking that there is nothing they can do.

Its bad timing as im staying with family and have a 2 hour drive home in 2 days🙈

Yes- go!

Hi
you definitely need to get to A & E as soon as you possibly can. The pins and needles sensation is worrying and may be due to nerve involvement. Please do get this checked out. It does seem like you possibly have a fracture.

Definitely get it checked out. Recently went to a & e on a Saturday evening (was told to come back to reassess a child's injury) was manic so I left and went back on Sunday morning and it was very quiet. Was children's a & e so maybe different to adults but try hopefully it won't be too bad in the morning.

I'd go to A and E now. In the meantime, elevate and ice it and avoid putting weight on it in case it is fractured.

Seriestwo · 28/12/2025 00:25

I’d get that checked

OldWave · 28/12/2025 00:29

That crack was probably a fracture. Sorry! Keep it elevated.

Wishiwasatailor · 28/12/2025 00:34

Yep minor injuries in the morning is your best bet. Alternate cold and heat packs to the area, elevate and take regular pain relief. Sprained/fractured ankles are the bread and butter of minor injuries try to get there as it opens and you'll be seen quickly (although X-ray often opens at 9).

Whitesapphire · 28/12/2025 00:38

Yeah if you heard a crack and the pain was that bad then pop to A and E for an X-ray, or minor injuries if they have X-ray facilities.

Mammut · 28/12/2025 01:33

Definitely get it checked

You need to go to a+e (sorry). I broke my ankle at the start of the year and was weight bearing on it before I knew what I’d done - turned out to need a plate and 9 screws - 2 breaks and a ligament between them was torn - you need to do the time at the front end (i.e. now) or the damage is worse and you’ll do more of it at the other end trying to recover (sorry again). Very much hope jts just a sprain but really worth getting it looked at.

Thank you for all the replies. Just heading back from minor injuries. I was in and out in 40 mins, only 2 of us there. Had an x-ray and they said nothing broken, so a bad sprain. I feel so stupid! I have a support type bandage to wear during the day. Although its making the pins and needles worse!

I had similar about a year ago, I missed the last two steps coming down the stairs, with my arms full, so couldn’t stop myself falling. The swelling and bruising was unbelievable. My right leg was 3 times the size. I can see the top floors of the hospital from my house, but had to get a cab as couldn’t walk there. Much like you I heard a crack and was convinced I’d broken it, but the doctor explained that the noise was the tendon snapping back into place. She also told me that it would heal quicker if it had been a break, that she had had a similar sprain in one ankle and had broken the other and would prefer the brake anytime!

It has taken a full year to heal, I still can’t go for a run without getting some swelling return. I couldn’t even go for a proper walk for the first four months.

I was given a lot of exercises to do several times a day, which I did religiously, but interestingly my NHS trust wont bandage or strap any injury like this, they said that research had shown that it may hinder recovery, of course, it may just be that it eats into their budget!
Wishing you a quick recovery.
