Please help me plan a short break to Rome for DHs 50th

TricNorthCarolina · 27/12/2025 13:52

I need your help please! Im planning a surprise visit to Rome for DHs 50th & I have no idea what to book.

We always do package holidays but I don't think that will be right for what Id like us to do.

What I'd like:
Return flights from Gatwick/Heathrow to Rome (Bournemouth is our nearest airport but I dont think it flys to Rome)
3/4 nights during the week not over a weekend
Early/mid October 2026 (not over half term)
2 adults
Hotel - not bothered about board type, just central to Rome to easily get out & about, dont need a pool etc as we will only be sleeping there.
Want to visit the 'usual' sights and also want to visit Pompeii

So, how do I do this? Best places to research, best places to book flights, hotel, trips etc. Any recommendations for hotels, best places to visit, any tips or tricks I need to know about?

Im completely clueless as we usually just book directly with Tui and I dont have to think at all.

Any help is gratefully received - thank you!

I would use chat gpt or a travel agent for this.
Try travel counsellors for travel agent - I’ve booked some amazing holidays through my local one!

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 27/12/2025 14:01

If you're only going for 3 or 4 nights I wouldn't try to fit Pompeii in as well. There is so much to do in Rome.

We went a few years ago, booked flights and picked a central hotel. It was all quite straightforward.

ocool · 27/12/2025 14:04

Bear in mind that Pompeii is nowhere near Rome. You can get there by taking the fast train to Naples, and changing to the local train for Pompeii. But I'm not sure you'd have enough time to really appreciate it in a long day trip from Rome.

as an alternative you could easily visit the superb ancient site at Ostia Antica 30 mins by train from Rome. It is amazing.

ill be back with more in a bit if you like.

Start with chatgpt. Type it all in, as much detail as possible on likes and dislikes and timings, budget and locations. And then see what it says. Then take that and fine tune. Its amazing at suggesting things. Then double check it (sometimes it imagines things!) and then ask it to look up flight times and prices etc

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 27/12/2025 14:12

Agree that Pompeii is another trip, so much to see and do in Rome. You'd need to get an express train to Naples, and then change to the local train for Pompeii. Just about doable in a very long and chaotic day - the local trains are rammed and erratic so you could easily miss your train back to Rome. Better to enjoy a stroll about in Rome or go to Ostia Antica, and do Pompeii another time.

Look at trip advisor, booking.com etc for ideas and prices in your budget but then try booking direct with a hotel you like the look of.

Flight - just look for the most convenient days & times from your preferred airport, and then book.
There are loads of hotels in Rome, but be aware that most have very small rooms, so you might want an upgrade. Don't stay near the main railway station, as it's not a great area.
Don't stay too far out of the city, as you'll waste time travelling.
Book a hotel that will arrange a car to pick you up from the airport (for a fee, obviously).
I would suggest that you stay near the Pantheon or near Piazza Navona - both good locations.
Buy a decent guide book to get a feel of the areas and sights.
Look online for hotel recommendations in the Telegraph, Guardian and Times - they have good selections to suit all budgets (but it won't be cheap, so don't penny pinch).
You will be able to walk everywhere, so don't bother about transport once you arrive.

Don't try to include Pompeii as well - that's a separate trip, and you will spend hours on the train, plus you need a day just to see Pompeii. 3 or 4 nights aren't really enough for Rome on it's own, but will give you an introduction.

Book the big ticket sights online at least 6 weeks in advance (ie Colosseum, Vatican Museums, also Galleria Borghese, if that interests you). Make sure you book them for different days! However, you can visit the Forum & Palatine Hill on the same day as the Colisseum.

Scatter the rest of your sightseeing sparingly across your days. Be aware that there's always something covered in scaffolding! There's also talk of an access fee for the Trevi Fountain from next year.
Take time to wander about, go down the back streets and get lost. Wear comfortable shoes!
Factor in lots of coffee stops and just watch the world go by.
There are so many wonderful things to see in Rome, I couldn't possibly list them all, so be selective. I've visited Rone 10 or 11 times over the last 35 years, and there are still things I haven't seen.

moogdroog · 27/12/2025 14:18

Recommend ChatGPT/Copilot or whatever to get the vague outline. I've had two similar length trips to Rome and still haven't seen everything, so I'd forget Pompeii- it's a long way unless you want to stay there and fly back from a different airport (and if you do that, Herculaneum is also very worth a visit). Train between Rome and Naples is fast and good.
But concentrate on Rome for that length of break - I recommend a few guided tours - we did one of the Colloseum last time and got so much more out of it that when we did it solo.

We stayed in trastavere, just on the outskirts. Was easy to travel about on tram/train/bus around the city. We booked a trip to Pompeii through Viator - it was a full day, 7am until 8pm and included a guided tour, and included a couple of stops (Positano, Limoncello Factory) with commentary from a lovely guide.
When we went in June it was really hot (38!) and we went to a few places at night around 11pm - trevi fountain, pantheon, piazza navona, piazza di sant ignazio (beautiful church & 1€ entry) we booked our colosseum tour through the same company, and also the Vatican tour (the museums were absolutely beautiful) we got the Q jumper pass at the Vatican partly because of the baking heat 🥵
Watch out for pickpockets at the main attractions and train stations.
Have a great time - I can’t wait to go back 🥰

Chat GPT makes a good few mistakes so dont rely on it ! Start with your dates and look for flights - Try Easy Jet / Ryan Air / British AIrways. You need to fly to Fumicino for ease of transport into Rome - EIther do small hand luggage and add 1 hold / checked suitcase OR do 2 items of cabin luggage . From Fumicino there is an easy Easy train. Hotel Look for ease on booking.com but look on the map selection so pick something that is central to what you want to see . Needs to be withing walking distance to a metro station . Look for a B&B basis . see the prices and what you woudl be comfortable paying. THEN go to the hotel webiste and book direct. Pick a few must things that you want to see - SKip the line to St Peters and the Vatican musuems for example . Then book them - again direct NOT via Get your guide or other things, Leave time for wandering as well. We did a sunset golf cart and it was ( expensive) but great fun. Or walk into a highstreet travel agency ( not Tui!) and ask for help . You could try someone like Selected Italy they do tailor made Italy trips. Pompei as others have said is a long way out maybe keep it for another Italy trip . Rome is tiring on teh feet but its a magical city ! Happy Planning ,

Stick to Rome only
Pre book everything
Stay in Trastevere

WhatALump · 27/12/2025 14:26

I went to Rome this summer and things I would add to what’s already been mentioned are:

There are so many stunning churches dotted around….if you walk past one, go in and have a look they are full of incredible art.
If the weather is good go to villa borghese and row boats on the lake it was €5 each and a good laugh
The trevi fountain gets ridiculously busy from very early in the morning. We were there at 6.30am and there were crowds already. Once you’ve been to the fountain go to L’antico Forno bakery on the corner for pastries that are out of this world.

we found all our info on TikTok for great places to go and tips and tricks for the trip. It was very helpful.

regista · 27/12/2025 14:36

Also agree that pompeii from Rome would be a long day that wouldn't do it justice and there is so much in Rome... Also recommend staying near Piazza Navona/Pantheon if you can, from there you can walk to lots of churches, Spanish Steps, Trevi etc. Stay in Trastevere if you like eating out. You can book direct for Colosseum and Vatican Museum - book the Vatican tour it's great, tickets for both are released by day - they sell them something like 30 days in advance so find out and set a reminder. St Peter's, Spanish steps and Trevi are best planned for first thing in the morning.

At the Pantheon, get a takeaway lunch from L'Antica Salumeria deli. Ice cream to die for at Gelateria La Romano.

Book flights.

Then book to stay here : Hotel Albergo del Senato

Walk everywhere.

Enjoy.

Hohofortherobbers · 27/12/2025 14:44

Another vote for trastevere. You can walk to centre in 2 mins and trastevere us gorgeous, cobbled streets and lots of cafes restaurants to eat out at night. I'll find my hotel name

Hohofortherobbers · 27/12/2025 14:46

Hotel san Francesco Roma. In trastevere

Agree - it's an excellent hotel. Book a room overlooking the piazza.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 27/12/2025 15:27

Hotel Artemide is lovely.
we did the Pompei and Herculaneum day trip, you leave Rome station at 7.30 am and gets back about 7.30pm. We used Askos tours and highly recommend.

WilfredsPies · 27/12/2025 15:36

I used to have a rich partner, if you want to splash out on a central hotel, the Marriott Grand Flora is lovely. It was very easy to get to the main sites from there.

Something else that was a highlight of the trip was a horse and carriage ride. You do sometimes feel like you’re taking your life in your hands as they weave in and out between cars, but the drivers are pretty good at pointing out the different buildings and saying what they are.

Rosa · 27/12/2025 17:44

Alomost forgot you will have to pay to see the Trevi fountain from 1st Feb its going to be €2 - My guess is that you will be able to book your time slot as well !

Oh I adore Rome. You’ll fall madly in love with it. As PP have said walk everywhere and eat everything you can.

You really don't need a travel agent for a basic city break. It couldn't be simpler to book flights and a hotel.

uhtredofbattenberg · 27/12/2025 19:28

Hotel Forum was brilliant when we went about 3 years ago. Near the coliseum. No pool, but had a lovely view from the breakfast area.

Found booking attractions a pita.

AyrshireTryer · 27/12/2025 19:31

I much, much, much preferred Milan.

LIZS · 27/12/2025 21:23

Pompeii is a full and long day with a lengthy train ride, don’t bother unless this is the only time you will ever visit that area of Italy as there is so much to do in Rome itself. We have been twice and not yet been inside the Palatine museum, Castel Sant’Angelo or to Ostia or Tivoli. Allow time just to wander around, Some sites like Nero’s Golden House are only open on selected dates and needs pre-booking.
