Ear piercing, jewellery metal

I recently got a cartilage piercing and a lobe piercing done with a needle.

My piercer is very against any silver ear jewellery, and yet so many shops sell it. Do all piercers say this? I’m now looking at white gold, but that obviously comes with an associated price tag.

My piercer was also quite keen to change the jewellery relatively quickly. I’ve read that cartilage piercings take longer to heal, so I haven’t changed anything yet.

Is your piercer selling jewellery? I found that the one we use for DD sells titanium and surgical steel ones at a reasonable price and she wore them for around a year before moving to silver.

I have a nickel allergy so we were concerened about DD when she got first pierced at 11. Nickel is one of the problems with silver jewellery, my sister can't even wear silver necklaces/rings/bracelets while my issues are mainly earrings.

Yes, they do sell jewellery.

Really, I’d like to have the most appropriate thing, and I know that includes implant grade titanium, or slightly less appropriately, white gold.

I’m finding the whole thing quite frustrating if I’m honest. They’ve also given me completely different advice about what jewellery I could change the cartilage piercing to, and about whether I could get a different piercing in my other ear.

I chose somewhere with a good reputation, but I feel like I’m losing faith in them.

I left my cartilage piercing in for six months, it def needed a lot longer to be left alone before fiddling with it.

Yes, my cartilage one is only starting to begin to feel healed now at around 5 months. My lobe piercing is around 3 months I think.

Surgical grade Stainless steel or titanium are best for new piercings.

Sterling silver can’t be left in ears for new piercing, makes the holes go black!!

MaarvaCarassi · 26/12/2025 21:46

Yes, I really don’t want anything to go black. Thinking about it, I wore gold jewellery for a few years after my first lobe piercings when I was younger. I don’t really like gold any more though.

Titanium or gold are best in case of allergy I think.

I wear titanium in my lobes as I’m allergic to nickel. Limerencia have some lovely options. ☺️

For a new piercing I’d only do titanium.
I have quite a bad metal allergy, probably exacerbated by wearing cheap earrings as a teenager. I can only wear titanium, platinum or 18ct gold now (can’t even wear surgical steel).
If you’re not sensitive to it I think sterling silver is fine for short term wear, but if you’re looking for studs that basically stay in your ear and hardly ever get taken out I’d go for titanium.
