Hi,

my son has suddenly become weight conscious. He’s 15 5’11” and weighs 10st 10lbs.

I think this is fine, but he thinks it makes him really heavy?

Not always a great tool but have you used the nhs bmi calculator with him? It'll probably show hes in the upper end of healthy. This might help open up conversations about healthy lifestyle s and body image.

Does BMI work for children?

TimSamandLulu · 26/12/2025 10:19

That’s just under bmi 21 for adults. He must look very slim?

BaubleMeTree · 26/12/2025 10:24

Ds2 is 5'11", 19 years old and just over 11 stone. His body looks completely fine, he is not a gym person and I see him when he leaves his bedroom in shorts to go to bathroom to shower. It is a good weight on him. There are no visible chubby parts to him at all. He is slender with broad shoulders.

I feel this is more about how your son feels he looks rather than weight. Talk to him, ask him to show you where he is getting his information from about being "heavy". Be curious and ask questions. Sadly social media will feed him the same stuff over and over so if one person says X then you usually get a lot of other people who also say X being suggested which reaffirms X. However, it might be misinformation. Go in curious and not shut anything down. You want to try to encourage critical thinking. Get him to question stuff.

Remind him he's still a child and probably wont stop growing until at least 18. His weight is fine for his height.

Greybeardy · 26/12/2025 10:37

That puts him comfortably within the normal weight range for his age and height assuming he’s not missing leg or something that would change the numbers (if you google the nhs bmi calculator you can put his numbers into the kids version). PP’s probably on to something with the idea of his perception/outside influence rather than objective numbers.

Show.him the numbers on NHS site.
