People putting their kids Christmas presents on Vinted

Kibble19 · 25/12/2025 22:26

Am I wrong to think that listing kids toys literally on Christmas Day is a bit…off?

There are loads of listings from the last few hours of brand new, unopened, unused toys that have clearly been gifted today, disliked or deemed unsuitable by the parents and are subsequently going to be sold. I accept some might be duplicate toys, but I bet the vast majority are not.

I think it’s odd that someone stands to make money for themselves from a gift that someone kindly gave their child, but maybe it’s just me.

What do you think?

I think that given you have no idea why those presents are on vinted and the reasoning behind why those presents are on vinted, you should stop judging to wild conclusions that might be total bollocks and just show you up as being judgy.

CloverPyramid · 25/12/2025 22:29

Why do you assume the parents are making money for themselves? We sell my son’s toys on Vinted but give the money to him.

I’ve never listed a Christmas present on Christmas Day, but only because my family are big on lists rather than people randomly choosing so we don’t end up with duplicates or unwanted items.

Kibble19 · 25/12/2025 22:32

Not assuming much when the listings literally say “unwanted gift”. 😂

Fair enough, people may do it and give the money to the kid.

Who cares at least it isn't going to landfill.

MaarvaCarassi · 25/12/2025 22:42

I sometimes wonder whether things are stolen when it says unwanted gift 😄.

Makemeanonymous · 25/12/2025 23:10

Yes I find this distasteful.

When my son was young if he ended up with a duplicate toy or book we would ask around to see if anyone we knew would like it for their child. Not for money. But just so someone could get the pleasure and use of it.

Eifla2o18 · 25/12/2025 23:12

My son is quite clear about things he won't ever open/use. He gets the money from online sales as they're his gifts. I'm in the process of slimming down the gift situation, as it's sad and wastful all round.

SnowSnow · 25/12/2025 23:13

I can’t imagine listing stuff on Christmas Day itself but if there is something unsuitable that can’t be returned I would consider listing on vinted after Christmas. For example clothes that are too small.

IHeartJeff · 25/12/2025 23:17

Perfect time to list - people have Christmas money to spend!

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 26/12/2025 10:17

Don't see anything wrong with it. Seems a sensible thing to do.

Kids often get gifted things they don't need or want. As do adults for that matter. Better than openingthem. Playing with them for a few kijutes and then them going to landfill. I doubt parents are making a profit. More likely going to use money for something their child actually wants.

Purlant · 26/12/2025 10:22

I can’t imagine looking on Vinted on Christmas Day to realise this! I really can’t understand why this would bother you as it has no bearing on your life. I’m impressed actually with the organisation, I tend to leave things hanging around, they get lost in the shed and then it’s a headache to sort out later.

MouseCheese87 · 26/12/2025 10:33

I don't see a problem with it. Better to sell it to someone who appreciates it whilst you get some money for it than it sitting there wasted, unused, taking up space. It's not going to hurt the gift giver's feelings if they don't know about it.

They often are. Writing 'this is brand new in the box because I stole it' would be frowned upon, so they put unwanted gift instead.
Years ago when I was looking to buy some GHD hair straighteners one seller had 3 unwanted gift GHDs to sell!

mamajong · 26/12/2025 11:16

I would assume the majority of parents would give the money to the child or use it to buy something they need rather than profitting themselves. Wheres the harm? Better than going in landfill. No matter how you try to position it some people do just buy random stuff that wont be used, best to accept politely and then allow it to go to someone who will use it amd put the money towards something useful or wanted. Winners all round surely?

LemonLass · 26/12/2025 11:19

Hi @Kibble19
As you ask what do I think (of all MN audience), I think "so what"? What does it matter to me/you/the man on the moon?

Everyone has their own view and entitled to it. It doesn't affect you/me/man on the moon so meh? YABU

Yes. Surely you’d just ask for it to be returned for full value, rather than sell it for partial value.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 26/12/2025 11:52

I imagine if they have reason to want to sell the gift, they need to get it listed ASAP before the market becomes overflowing with every one else’s unwanted gifts.

Depends on the giver.
My parents have given my children lots of presents they had no interest in. If we'd asked to return and swap them something else it would have started World War 3. Much easier to put them in the cupboard and try to sell at a later date (not just after Christmas to see if the DC came round to the toys, plus it's a rubbish time of year to sell toys as the market is saturated and most people are skint!)

So if you sold your kids things on vinted do you pocket the money? Thats a really strange assumption.

Anywherebuthere · 26/12/2025 11:59

There's a high chance it could be unwanted by the recipient too.

Also it can be a marketing technique. Often people buy items at sale prices themselves with the intention of selling at a higher price later and will dress it up as an unwanted gift and so on.

How is browsing MN any more superior to browsing Vinted on boxing day? I would have thought they were level.

Nothing to do with superior, just that most people have just had a a load of gifts (well obviously not the people on MN who never buy presents for adults!), so I just can’t imagine shopping for more things! But, I’ve probably answered my own question as people on MN never get presents!
