Ripped my fingernail off this morning - still in Pain

Playing some game with DD and stabbed my acrylic nail against the floor. Ripped 90% off the nail bed, blood and agony that was honestly worst than childbirth.

7 hrs later and it’s still agony, still bleeding (it’s bandaged up now). I trimmed the top of the acrylic and put the nail back in place before wrapping it. There’s too much still attached to pull it off but way too much off for it to reattached .

what do I do? Is there anything I can do?!

I absolutely feel your pain. I slipped on the stairs a few years ago. Grabbed at the handrail and ripped off 2 of my acrylics along with my own nails. They were literally hanging on by the bottom of my nail. The pain was indescribable. I couldn't cut the acrylic down as it was too painful. I ended up going to a &e as I was in so much pain. All I can say is take heavy duty painkillers and keep an eye on it for infection xx

I won't lie, its going to hurt like hell for a few days and you probably will lose your nail. Ive never had acrylics since. Take the strongest painkillers you can. And be careful sleeping as the last thing you wa t to do is knock it. I would put your arm in a sling to protect it.

The nurse at the hospital even said to me that the pain is worse than childbirth too

bryceQ · 25/12/2025 17:43

Yep! I have done this. It really really really hurt! I kept dipping in disinfectant all around the area and kept covered with a bandage. My actual nail didnt fully come off for a week or so. Then a month to properly grow. It was a harrowing experience!!!

Rippeditoff · 25/12/2025 22:35

Yikes - still bleeding

Be really careful about bandaging it. I would probably consider going to out of hours if it's still bleeding or at least going in the morning. When I was 5 I ripped the whole of my thumbnail off and the doctor put the wrong sort of dressing on and it bonded to the nailbed and had to be ripped off and the taking off process is still one of the most painful things I can remember in my entire life.

Edit: sorry hadn't clocked you'd reattached the nail. That's safer at least in that the bandage won't attach. I think it's probably clear this was a dreadful experience for me seeing as it distracted me from actually reading what had been written!

Edit 2: also is it just oozing or continually bleeding so you have to change the bandage every hour or whatever? Because if the former then I'd probably hang on and keep an eye for infection as suggested by others now I have clocked you've stuck the nail back on.

Oh my gosh I feel your pain! How is it?

FiloPasty · 25/12/2025 23:08

God this sounds horrendous poor you x

Ladamesansmerci · 25/12/2025 23:09

I have no advice but I'm sending sympathy and hugs because that sounds bloody horrific!! If it's still bleeding tomorrow/looking gnarly, I'd go to urgent care and get it cleaned/dressed properly. Fingers are infection prone, so keep a close eye on it.

This happened to me with an acrylic toenail. I would recommend seeing a doctor or nurse if you can (we are lucky enough to have a minor injuries unit where I live and I went there a couple of days after I'd done it). My nail had pulled out at the base and needed to be "re-sited" - nurse said it would not have grown back correctly otherwise. I also needed a heavy course of antibiotics to prevent infection.

I'm so sorry this has happened to you as it is awfully painful. I found warm salt water soaks quite therapeutic. Also if you are bandaging it then be careful to ensure that the sticky part of any plaster or tape is only on your skin and not the nail itself.

I really hope you heal quickly 🤒

pambeesleyhalpert · 26/12/2025 22:48

I did this last year I can still feel the pain! It didn’t take long to grow back but I couldn’t have any nails on that finger for a While!

pambeesleyhalpert · 26/12/2025 22:49

Oh I remember what I did! I bought a finger guard from Amazon. There were like 50 in a pack and it was like a long bandage I put over my finger to protect it! That really helped
