What is this in my breast?

So I am in my early 40s and have been on HRT for about 6 months now. I have no history of breast cancer in my family.

Last Wednesday I found a lump in my breast.
I only noticed it because it started really hurting and when I pressed on it it was really sore and for the first couple of nights it kept me awake and I had to take paracetamol.

It was quite a large irregular lump initially taking up about 1/4 of my whole breast tissue. I’ve quite small boobs anyway so that isn’t difficult.

I obviously check it a lot since finding it and feel like it’s changed shape and it seemed to be getting smaller and less painful as the days went on.

I went to the doctors about it yesterday and the doctor has put in a referral for me to go get it checked at the hospital.

The thing is I’ve woken up this morning and its practically gone I can still feel it a little but its not sore at all anymore.

What the hell was it?!? Has anyone had similar.
I was so so worried when I first found it and now nothing its so strange.

Go to your GP so that can be checked out. I am just back from the breast cancer clinic where my lump has been found to be a calcified lump of fat. The relief immense and they would rather you got it checked than wait and see.

Was you due on your period, because a lot of people get sore lumpy boobs before they come on.

fluffythecat1 · 24/12/2025 11:11

It could be nothing, but worth going to the hospital appointment to be sure, it could come back again.

A cyst? A haematoma? There are loads of different kinds of lumps that can happen to breasts that aren't cancer.

Just go along to the breast clinic and they'll do a mammogram and ultrasound and tell you for sure hopefully it's not dodgy. Something like 80% of breast lumps referred to the clinic are benign.

alwaysstressed · 24/12/2025 11:27

The doctor said it could be a couple of weeks before I get a referral through for the breast clinic.
and feeling it today it’s definitely a lot smaller it could be gone by the time the referral comes through so should I still go to the appointment if its away? I don’t want to waste their time

Yes I would very much suggest you do still go to the appointment. It might put your mind at rest and they may have more insight than us who are just guessing at what it could have been.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 24/12/2025 11:34

Possibly a cyst that has burst but please go to the appointment.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/12/2025 11:36

Breast cancer and mastectomy in 2016 and also many, many cysts over the years. Sound very much like a cyst. Was told that tumours usually don’t hurt. Cysts can be drained if troublesome but often disappear by themselves.

Glad you’re being checked out, though it’s highly unlikely to be anything to worry about.

surreygirly · 24/12/2025 12:05

see a doctor

Brightbluesomething · 24/12/2025 12:12

You still need this checked out so please do go to your appointment. You should be seen on the fast track pathway within 2 weeks?
I’ve just been on this and my lump changed in size but was still 1-2cm when I had my mammogram and ultrasound. It was thankfully a cyst and has nearly completely disappeared now, I can’t see it and can only very slightly feel it. They did a full check to make sure there wasn’t anything else as I had shooting pains so please go anyway.

It's never a waste of time! Get it checked regardless, just because ut is too small to feel easily doesn't mean it isn't the start of something. And if it is. The sooner they know the better chances are.

However, from what you describe it ia likely a cyst but you should absolutely get it checked.

Did you not read the entire OP? She’s seen a GP and been referred

StCuntyMcCunterson · 24/12/2025 13:13

Get it checked. I have this every so often and had it recently with a red mark at the sore point (did you?) I have dilated glands presumably after an infection. Each time before it’s been an infection. Sounds similar but get it checked Flowers

VanilleFraise · 24/12/2025 16:12

Id still go to the appt.

Empress13 · 25/12/2025 00:25
