Electrics: What do you wish you'd updated?

I'm planning a rewire, if you've done this what do you wish you'd included?

Apart from additional plug sockets is there anything that would be really useful to have?

Some of our sockets have usb sockets but not all. It would be easier if they all had them.

BaubleMeTree · 23/12/2025 16:45

A plug socket near where you will have your Christmas tree.

Outdoor sockets. My front one has a built in timer which I bought specifically for my Christmas lights. Plus at the back of the house for plugging in gardening tools or DIY tools like a jigsaw/chopsaw. The front one also functions as this too.

Lighting in the loft and a socket up there for if you ever want to hoover up there.

Consider ethernet especially to places in the house that might have a low wifi availability or if you might have a need to plug into the network eg any indoor/outdoor security cameras would be far more reliable than wifi when using PoE (power over ethernet - data and power.)

If you think you might want to power either outdoor lights or an electric shower cable you can have the cable runs done and connect them further down the line to the consumer unit.

We put outdoor sockets at the back for lawnmower etc but didn't even think of the front for Christmas lights; wishing I'd done that now!

We have a socket in the hallway downstairs for the "big" hoover (although I use a rechargeable stick one most of the time now). I wish I'd put one upstairs too though as it would have been handy on a few occasions.

Do you have a light (and easily accessible light switch) in your loft? Moving the switch within reach of the hatch has been a big improvement here.

FuzzyPuffling · 23/12/2025 17:03

Lights in the understairs cupboards.
We did have these put in and I am very glad.

Ladymuckypuddle · 23/12/2025 17:05

I agree with all above, will add to get all sockets with USB bits. We did and we only generally use the USB slots now and not the plug bits. Don't think plugs will be a thing in the near future.

Ilovemyshed · 23/12/2025 17:08

Make sure you have your oven on a separate circuit, upgrade to 45 amp if you can and add a second feed for a 30 amp.

Lots of plug sockets.

EV charger point outside. Outside plug sockets in useful places.

Consider the size of the fuse on the main board and upgrade to 100 amp if its not already.

hopingforthemillion · 23/12/2025 17:11

If you have a kitchen island, power supply to that.

OddBoots · 23/12/2025 17:14

Even if you are not getting an EV charger or solar ask for a fuse board with enough space and capacity for them so you don't need to worry about that if you decide to add them.

DoIdriveaVauxhallZafira · 23/12/2025 20:14

Thanks these are great - especially the USB points, light in loft and plug for Christmas lights. Have been looking at sockets for islands and found one which rises up from the counter which I'm a big obsessed by now!

We did a lot of the above plus getting a Ring doorbell wired in. Dimmer switches, a plug inside a tall kitchen utility cupboard for a stick vacuum.

TutTutTutSigh · 23/12/2025 20:21

Sockets high up the walls you will mount tvs on.

Wiring for a led mirror and electric toothbrush charger in the bathroom

Sockets in hallways

TutTutTutSigh · 23/12/2025 20:22

Oh yes and cctv, no better time to do it

Sausagescanfly · 23/12/2025 20:26

There are a couple of places where I'd like to be able to switch lights on/off but we didn't put wires/switches. We can turn on our landing lights from the hall, but not the hall from the landing. And we have switches for our kitchen extension part way down the room, but not by the kitchen door.

TutTutTutSigh · 23/12/2025 20:37

The next bedroom I do will have wall switches for the bedside lamps.

Greenbaglady · 23/12/2025 20:38

We put in a lamp circuit with its own switch in the living room and master bedroom in a house we built and it was so good. Also hard wired speaker cable for surround sound.

DeanStockwell · 23/12/2025 20:50

Wired smoke alarms so you don't have to faff arse around with batteries ( tho they have a battery back up but they last for yonks )

Motion sensor light in your hall / porch so it comes on when the front door is opened, much easier than fumbling for a light switch when you are contending with keys / dc/ dogs/shopping / cats determine to trip you up.

DoIdriveaVauxhallZafira · 01/01/2026 19:34

Hadn't spotted the latest posts earlier, some great ideas thanks!
Was thinking extra light switches & bathroom lights/plugs are a great idea but especially like the tips for motion sensor lights in porch and the high plug sockets for TV

We bought a house that had been rewired four years before. There's no plug socket in the hall, which would be a great central point for the vacuum cleaner.

Think about how you live, where do you really need socket - along one wall we need a connection for side flight, fish tank, plug in electric fire, TV, Xmas tree.

Do look into the question of new smoke alarms at the same time. Our old ones regularly went off or making a noise due to low battery (always in the night) . We had some new ones fitted, and haven't had to struggle switching them off for a bit of slightly over cooked toast
