My poor toes - A&E or not

Octopus45 · 23/12/2025 15:30

So I managed to bang into a 3kg weight in the floor this morning whilst was cleaning. Just been going about my business since. Didn’t realise how bad it was. Know there is probably little that can be done. Would you go to A&E?

It's probably quiet today? Go before people start drinking in the evening.
You need a splint thingy, I think

I wish you better ASAP 💐

1980isitjustme · 23/12/2025 15:32

I wouldn’t as I don’t think they could do anything.

if you’ve been going about your business since doesn’t that mean that it’s manageable anyway?

Proudsaver · 23/12/2025 15:32

It wouldn’t even cross my mind to go to A&E for this

DoBeGoodDontBeBad · 23/12/2025 15:33

Nah.

Savlon and a plaster

You can't go to A&E for a stubbed toe

Yep as someone who wasted many hours with two broken toes in a&e a few years back
... mine were very swollen and I had bad radiating pain for hours

unless they were going black or something I wouldn't bother they did precisely zero to treat just x-rayed and said "its broken" 👍👍👍

Oneearringlost · 23/12/2025 15:35

How painful is it?
If it's agony, I would go to your local OOH/Minor injuries or A&E, if not, I would weather the storm, perhaps splint it to it's neighbouring toe, for support.

Octopus45 · 23/12/2025 15:37

I’ve just found an ice pack. Hoping that will help.

Me neither.

TheSunRisesInTheEast · 23/12/2025 15:39

Ouch! Even if it was broken, I don't think there's a lot you could do with it. Maybe wrap some cotton wool or a cotton pad around your toe and secure it with plasters, that way you'll protect it from further knocks. Put some filled in slippers on your Christmas list 😆

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/12/2025 15:40

Do you have a minor injuries clinic near you?

I tend not to bother with a simple broken toe unless it’s out of shape. I just buddy strap.

If your big toe is affected then do go and get it checked as that is more serious.

If you do need to buddy strap then put some padding like folded gauze between the toes before strapping.

Lennonjingles · 23/12/2025 15:41

I’ve dropped things on my toes various times, it’s good the bruising has come out, never needed to do anything, healed in a couple of days.

Only2daystogo · 23/12/2025 15:42

Strapped them together, ice them, take some paracetmol and iburofen and watch a Christmas film.

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 23/12/2025 15:43

Ice pack.. maybe alternate with heat pack.
Painkillers.. im often doing it.. l walk with a stick usually.. l can trip over thin air...or walk into the hugest object.. I'm so clumsy

gamerchick · 23/12/2025 15:45

No, not unless they were pointing in different directions. I'd just tape them up.

OleOlay · 23/12/2025 15:45

Nah if they are broken the hospital will only tape them together and remind you not to drive until you can stamp your foot without pain (four weeks)

JudgeBread · 23/12/2025 15:45

I honestly wouldn't bother. It's heaving this time of year and you'll be bottom of the triage list so probably sat there for hours and hours just to be told to ice it.

I'd just tape them up, ice them and take it easy, sleep with them elevated if possible.

FurForksSake · 23/12/2025 15:45

as you were able to go about your day and they aren’t deformed, I would not be seeking emergency medical care. If they become ridiculously swollen, or painful, or they become cold or look deformed then go.

DullAndUnconvincing · 23/12/2025 15:45

Ouch!

I would recommend getting into a really good otc painkiller routine (alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen) and treating yourself to a lovely pair of faux-Uggs that will be comfy to put on and off and that you can wear anywhere

gerispringer · 23/12/2025 15:48

Even if they are broken nothing will be done about it - you can get padded toe covers in Boots which will keep the toes separate and straight. I’ve broken a toe before - it’s really painful but with a bit of padding and being careful not to knock it - it will heal.

I ran over mine with a shopping trolley while wearing flip flops. It was agony for weeks Op, had to wear flip flops for weeks too, I couldn't bear them to be 'in' anything but fresh air. Didn't go to Drs or anything just limped and whinged on until they healed😁

TomatoSandwiches · 23/12/2025 15:50

Unless your big toe has been hit and it's hurting they won't do anything but wrap them up which you can do at home and advise whatever painkiller of choice you tend to have.

AllWackedOffOfSantaSnacks · 23/12/2025 16:00

A friend didn't go to A&E and ended up with a metal plate later when it hadn't healed, and then had yet another op to remove the metal later. But that was her big toe, not the lesser toes.

UpMyself · 23/12/2025 16:05

Don't 'buddy strap'. Broken toe - NHS

That website says to buddy strap unless it’s the big toe or it’s pointing at an odd angle.

BillieWiper · 23/12/2025 16:28

There's no point going to a&e or even minor injuries. The treatment for broken toes is rest. They literally won't do anything.
Buy some support things from a pharmacy or tape the toes together.

I broke what I thought was four toes this year, turns out just one as it no longer bends. It takes about six weeks to fully heal if it's broken and less obviously if just bruised.
