I’m thinking the best think to do is top up voluntary
already got 32 years in the bag, this year will be almost another year but youngest turned 12 in Sept

so will be 3 months short of a year

So I’m thinkng I’ll top up this year
making it 33 years
so 2 more to get
but I’m not sure if I’m gonna go back to paid work or not yet
i know you need 35 years for the state pension

somkm
jot sure if I want too pay the voluntary extra for the next two years or wait and see if I get a job in the future

You’re seriously don’t think you’ll work for the next 20 years?! You think the state pension will be enough Shock

I certainly don’t think that would be enough

It all depends on whether you were ever contracted out in the past. If you have been, then you may need to pay more than the 35 years. Some many more years.

Thanks for the advice all, I guess that saves me trying to top it up

I guess I’ll give have to keep an eye out incase the goal posts get moved again

the 2.5k I was thinking I’d need to top up with will be invested into other investments

Good news that you are fully paid up. Just keep an eye on it in case they increase the number of years required in the future.

I got caught out by NI credits being stopped after 12. I am registered as self employed and I had no idea they would stop when DS2 turned 12. I then had 2 years of no NI which came back to bite me when I found myself made redundant and JSA needing the last 2 years of NI payments to be eligible.
I think I swerved a bullet as all my interactions with the Job Centre were horrible (and I've since found work thankfully), but it's something to take into account.

I’ve checked how many qualifying years I have in government gateway so I know I have 32 years already in the bag
I’m certain of that

what I’m figuring out is what to do next
I’m thinking perhaps too this year off for sure as this year I’m only 3 months short

but I’m not too sure about the next two years

Maybe get a job?

JustMyView13 · 23/12/2025 17:05

Non-means tested JSA. You get credits whilst looking for work.

I can’t see two options

Directly underneath. This is the view I get and it says what I’d get now and what I’d get with 7 more years to qualify for full.

OP is fully paid up and qualifies for the full New State Pension already and cant increase her forecast anymore. She has nothing more to pay so she wont have the second part. Hers says that she cant increase her forecast anymore.

ThirdStorm · 23/12/2025 20:02

Thanks @rainbowunicorn i missed that update!
