Always been something of a crap sleeper, but lately reached new levels of can’t sleep. Recovering from an operation but not in pain as such. Have form for fretting about things in the wee small hours, but nothing particular this time.

Friend recommended Nytol but it has done nothing for me. Anything else people have tried that’s available over the counter?

How old are you? Could it be perimenopause? My sleep went to pot earlier this year and HRT has sorted it out. Keep an eye on whether it is at all cyclical. GP told me early waking was a sign of depression and tried me on anti-depressants- that definitely didn’t work!
You could try magnesium glycinate supplements, a multivitamin and iron supplements to make sure you’re not lacking. I was told to try drowsy antihistamines but they didn’t work for me. I do find lavender oil helps calm me in the night if I’m ruminating.
Good luck, it’s rotten not sleeping.

I’ve tried many OTC sleep aids over the years, all a bunch of crap in my experience. Get a real prescription from your GP if you can, I was given Amitriptyline and it worked like a charm, unsurprisingly as it’s a sedative but it did the job

I can relate, but walking works for me. I get the cheapo walking pad out of the cupboard and do a slow hour in front of the tv in the evening when I’m going through an insomniac period.

I don’t see it as exercise as such (I’m a regular morning gym goer), more as something to help my chattering mind. And it’s a lot less boring than meditating!

Thanks all. There’s definitely an element of peri-menopause here - I have been on HRT patches for just over 2 years, but needed to come off them in August due to my operation originally being scheduled for September and a risk of DVT post-op. Op got postponed, and I stayed off the patches as didn’t know how soon it would be rescheduled. Had the op early Dec, and am now on four weeks of daily stomach injections to lower risk of DVT, so I imagine I’ll be able to stick a patch back on once that is over with, which might help a little with the sleep. It wasn’t life-changing for me when I was on it, tbh, and I’d be meaning to go to the GP regarding the peri symptoms not massively improving while on the HRT, so perhaps I need a tweak to that and maybe some prescription help for the sleep in the meantime.
