Anybody know anything about Ukuleles?

Hello, I have bought my 9 year a Maholo ukulele for Christmas.

it has just arrived and it is very small.

it’s a 21 inch soprano ukulele. I see now that concert and tenor are bigger.

Do you think this is suitable for a 9 year old? Or should I try and return it and get a bigger one?

A soprano is fine. It is what most primary schools use to teach ukelele.

That's the standard size. It's part of the fun and makes the left hand fretting easier for little hands. Nice gift.

it's fine. you really need a tuner too if you haven't already got one - something like this
Snark SN6X Clip-On Tuner for Ukulele, Black, 1.8 x 1.8 x 3.5 inches : Amazon.co.uk: Musical Instruments & DJ

Brilliant, thanks all.

and yes @P00hsticksi do need to get a tuner, thanks for the link.

I have some spare strings and some note stickers so once I get a tuner we will be good to go!

If it's their first ukulele then it's totally fine. Our DD asked for one when she was 9 too and we got her a standard small one costing very little as I wasn't sure it was something she'd remain interested in. I arranged weekly lessons for her and she absolutely loved it. The following Christmas Santa brought her a beautiful concert ukulele which she then played for many years.

Lovely gift!

DS started out on one of those 10 years ago. He’s now about to take G7 Classical guitar. He’s got a concert uke too. He uses an tuner app, Guitar Tuna (does ukes too).

That is a great gift. I'd buy a physical tuner too - I have never liked the apps. Be aware that when it is new, the strings will still be quite stretchy, so it will need tuning regularly. You can stretch the strings yourself (find a video) but I was worried about breaking them when I got my first. I hope your child loves it.
