If you’re English but living in Ireland…..

We’re planning on visiting Family who live in Ireland on Boxing Day and I was thinking of making up a little hamper (for a couple in their late 50s & early 60s) with products that are hard to find or don’t exist in Ireland.

Please could I have some suggestions?

I’ll be taking a cabin size suitcase although it will be being checked in. We’re flying with Aerlingus, who I believe allow you to take a cabin size suitcase that’s checked in at no extra charge, so don’t think the 100ml rule will apply? Also flying from Manchester if it’s relevant.

Gosh, I'm racking my brains here but right now I can't think of anything. I can get my hands on pretty much everything here in Ireland that I could in England, tbh. If it was the other way round I'd have lots of ideas!

A thoughtfully chosen hamper is a nice gift to receive anyway, so I'd just go with some nice luxury items.

I'll come back if I think of anything.

Soonenough · 22/12/2025 18:08

Drink ! Always welcome . Find out their favourite. Anything from Waitrose maybe .
Nothing with a Union Jack on it 😆 lol.

IrishHamper · 22/12/2025 18:08

@DramaAlpaca

Thanks for your input! I think I’ll end up doing a hamper of some description at least.

I agree it’s very hard to think of items so I’ll probably just have a trip to M&S and buy some fancy cheese, chutneys, crackers, biscuits and wine at this rate.

Happy to take recommendations for just nice items to receive in a hamper too 😁

No Waitrose in Ireland so maybe some bits from there?

VaddaABeetch · 22/12/2025 18:15

We don't have Boxing day in Ireland.
We have St Stephen's day 😀

MayaPinion · 22/12/2025 18:16

Ireland has M&S and all the major supermarkets. You might want to think about British products local to where you live - Cornish gin, Dundee cake, Devon fudge, local honey, etc. The kind of thing you might find at a farmers market.

Agree with this, I always do a hamper of Waitrose stuff for my family when I go home

DramaAlpaca · 22/12/2025 18:16

Actually, Waitrose is a good shout. If you're in the North, maybe something from Booths. God, I miss Booths!

We have M&S, but for some of us it's a trek to get to one, so that might depend on where they live.

Inextremis · 22/12/2025 18:19

Stinking Bishop cheese, Cheese footballs.

northernstars · 22/12/2025 18:22

I’m from Manchester but living in Dublin. For me it would be Vimto, Dandelion and Burdock, Eccles cakes and Soreen - if you’re asking!!
I fly Ryanair so a different terminal but they have fancy biscuits and chocolates etc at Manchester Airport.
Also, if they smoke/drink - duty free!

BunfightBetty · 22/12/2025 18:40

My Irish friend, who lives very rurally, likes me to bring bits from the Italian deli/grocer, oddly enough, because that sort of thing can be hard to find, and require a bit of a trek, where she lives.

My daughter lives in Ireland and bemoans that she can't get corned beef, fruit teacakes, crumpets and English stuffing, oh and ham stock cubes. I'm taking them over on boxing day

We live not far from a Booths in Penrith and my daughter who now lives in Drogheda says the same thing!

Spices can be good. You can get whole cumin, coriander seed etc in SuperValu now but it is harder to get things like nigella seed, amchur…

You can DEFINITELY get corned beef here!

santiishot · 22/12/2025 19:28

Manchester airport usually has a good selection of Salford Rum - it’s delicious and the bottles are fabulous

Also teacakes and crumpets!

What is 'English stuffing'?

CraftandGlamour · 22/12/2025 19:48

Absolutely get some nice Waitrose bits.

RubieChewsDay · 22/12/2025 20:00

Yep, Waitrose goods for sure. I live in Belfast and the muffins (for toasting rather than cake types) are weird here.

Buscake · 22/12/2025 20:01

My family all live in Ireland. They like very specific things they can’t get there eg president butter, twiglets, mustard powder, smoked garlic granules, marmite products eg marmite cashews. Check the Brexit rules though..

These are all easily available in Ireland, in fact I'd get them all in my local quite rural Tesco.

She lives near Dublin in Drogheda, where do you buy yours?
