Has anyone bought or is going to buy some liqueurs this Christmas?

I mean stuff like Tia Maria, Blue Bols, Creme de Menthe, Chambord, Cassis, Advocaat and so on. If so, how do you plan to serve them? I know Chambord and Cassis can be added to sparkling wine but I don't know about the others.

I used to love Tia Maria. And I always bought a bottle as a treat at Christmas - I don't really drink alcohol now apart from the occasional glass of wine though so don't buy it now.
Ut's lovely just by itself but i often used to drink my Tia Maria as a Black Russian - with a measure of vodka and a dash of coke served over ice.
And in coffee - I think it's called a Calypso coffee. A measure of Tia Maria, coffee and a layer of cream on the top.

I've never bought the other liqueur you mention I'm afraid. But I did used to sometimes buy Drambui at Christmas. That was just beautiful to drink by itself. Or again in coffee.

We have Chambord and cassis to add to wine. Cherry and apricot brandy as MIL has a sweet tooth, served like sherry in small glasses. Drambuie to be served over ice and Manzanilla (I think) to be served chilled.

No other suggestions really.

I love a crème de menthe and baileys over crushed ice. Tastes like an after8! Gorgeous

I tend to drink liqueurs on their own in little glasses. Sipping them not drinking like shots.

TheTecknician · 22/12/2025 11:04

I think Blue Bols or curacao provide the orange flavour and bright blue colour in a Blue Lagoon cocktail. I can't imagine ever drinking Advocaat in any form. The thought of a drink made mainly from egg yolk is too disgusting to contemplate!

A snowball is great at Xmas! Basically advocaat and lemonade 😊

Randomchat · 22/12/2025 11:08

I've got a Christmas bottle of Drambuie. I like drinking it with ginger ale. But I have no idea if that's the right way

TheTecknician · 22/12/2025 11:14

All a matter of taste. I don't suppose there are any right or wrong ways to enjoy liqueurs, provided you don't poison yourself!

I just had an amazing Christmas cocktail in a restaurant the other day and took a picture of the ingredients: spiced apple margarita. It was gently warming but tasted really clean and refreshing. I felt great after drinking 5. I bought some Xante (pear cognac) to make them at home.

Baby Guinness - 3/4 fill a shot glass with Tia Maria, float Baileys on top.

Baby Lager - Licor 43 as the base (or I suppose you could make it with any similar-coloured liqueur e.g. Galliano) with Horchata 43 as the float, or you could use Baileys or just cream.

Lots of other "shot cocktail" recipes online and, indeed, other cocktails but I think the baby ones look really nice.

Most liqueurs are nice with sparkling wine but, as you say, the fruity ones e.g. Cassis are traditional.

Pour them over vanilla ice cream.

Lidl have x good selection, toffee baileys is 2.99£

MrsBeltane · 22/12/2025 12:10

I've bought cherry brandy. It's for a black forest trifle.

Not a trifle fan but a black forest variant sounds appealing. Laden with calories!

I buy a bottle of amaretto at Christmas to make the Godfather cocktail. The Godfather isn't a very Christmassy name for a drink, but it's got amaretto in it and so tastes very Christmassy to me. I make it with two thirds Scotch and one third amaretto, served over ice.

Wiglio · 22/12/2025 12:59

Crème de menthe poured on half a grapefruit as a starter, very 1970s

CountingQuiche · 22/12/2025 13:21

Use your Chambord for a French Martini. Lots of recipes online, but basically it is vodka, pineapple juice and Chambord. Delicious.

A mix of Tia Maria and sambuca
no ice or mixer

My favourite ❤️

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/12/2025 22:15

Maybe some Cointreau, we already have Drambuie. Both definitely for sipping, just straight.
Somewhere we have a bottle of Cassis, so might make some Kir Royales, with Cremant.

Gliblet · 22/12/2025 22:21

I've been trying to use up and get rid of some of the weirder ones I've been given over the years (apricot and lychee for example) but a couple I particularly like:

Chambord, St Germaine or Cassis in a glass of prosecco

Baileys, Tia Maria, and Grand Marnier (Tia Maria in first, Baileys slowly poured over the back of a teaspoon so it settles on top, then the orange liqueur in another layer on top of that

50/50 mix of cherry liqueur and Amaretto (even better over frozen cherries)

Tia Maria with orange juice

Baileys with espresso and vodka (or Tia Maria)

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 22/12/2025 22:28

DH and I both had Fra Angelico on our Xmas lists. We like it over ice. Ditto Amaretto.

I occasionally have Advocaat neat or as a snow ball at Xmas.

I like Tia Maria neat or in a Black Russian.

TheTecknician · 23/12/2025 10:21

I never got on with Drambuie - or Southern Comfort. Both are way too sweet and syrupy for my taste. However, that's in their neat form - might be better as cocktail ingredients.

I'm not a big drinker but some of these drinks sounds super! I have opened my bottle of bailey's which I'll have over ice.
