Weird Christmas dinner must haves!

As the title says what items do other people have on Christmas dinner that you find weird.
For me it’s red cabbage and pickles! Just why!!
Although I do like yorkies and cauli cheese on my dinner.

Love red cabbage! Never been a fan of Yorkshire pudding.

We also never had broccoli with ours, though I got some with the ASDA 5 veg for £1 deal, will give it to the baby!

One year we tried tempura Brussels sprouts, they were actually delicious! And I make aubergine (melanzane) parmigiana.

My ex-boyfriend's family use to have mushy peas on their Christmas dinner & a good friend always has a dollop of ketchup on hers

Minniliscious · 21/12/2025 20:45

Love cauli cheese and yorkies - but not on a Christmas dinner. Just no.

My DH insists on sweetcorn with Christmas lunch. Weirdo. 🤔

FartyBrainedHippo · 21/12/2025 20:54

We always used to have baked beans (along with all the other normal veg). It’s only recently I’ve reluctantly admitted this is bizarre.

We always had a side known as ‘creamy sweetcorn’. My auntie makes it. I believe it’s just a white sauce but perhaps made with evaporated milk? Sounds rank! But it’s delicious and definitely belongs on Xmas dinner.

CapitanSandy · 21/12/2025 21:12

Cooked beetroot here served hot. Delicious!

Hesma · 21/12/2025 21:16

I’ve never understood bread sauce

Girasoli · 21/12/2025 21:19

Yorkshire puddings
Green beans instead of Brussels sprouts

MamaBobo · 21/12/2025 21:22

We do fillet steak for Christmas dinner but we have stuffing, chipolatas and pigs in blankets as well. Basically the family liked the Turkey dinner but not the Turkey. Maybe it’s a bit weird but they do love it!

Oreosareawful · 21/12/2025 21:25

Is cauliflower cheese unusual? I’ve had it every year since being a child. It’s always been served at the in-laws for Christmas dinner too. I never considered it to be an oddity!

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 21/12/2025 21:33

I have everything I like with Xmas dinner because why not?! Swede, cauli cheese, Yorkshires, I don’t care what others think, it’s one day a year and they’re not the ones eating it!

I’ve never tried it but it doesn’t sound appealing to me at all.

Livingthebestlife · 21/12/2025 21:40

I'm in Ireland but I can never understand the pigs in blankets, rashers and sausages with your dinner, 😲🤔 now granted we have turkey and ham in Ireland and even though it's from the same animal as the rashers and sausages I just can't wrap my head around it. Also Yorkshire puddings.... pastry?? Like what do you do, fill them with your meat and other things and eat them with your hands?

Janey12345 · 21/12/2025 21:41

I always have a small bowl of white breadcrumbs, toasted then fried in butter to sprinkle on the Christmas turkey, sprouts everything. It reminds me of my mother as she always did this. I’m not sure if it was a wartime austerity measure but it’s really nice.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/12/2025 21:42

Bread sauce makes me heave. However our family recipe of sausage meat and haggis stuffing is amazing.

Elmspringwater · 21/12/2025 21:58

Half of what some have said they eat on this thread is disgusting.

Empress13 · 21/12/2025 22:25

Cauli cheese is acceptable IMO on a Xmas dinner😁

Minniliscious · 21/12/2025 23:15

Bread sauce is bloody amazing! Homemade is the best - let the garlic infuse in the milk for a few hours , add a touch of nutmeg - yum

I love dried peas on mine. The ones in the box with a tablet you steep overnight. Very popular where I live.

I was at a wedding and the person sitting next to me had ketchup on her leek and potato soup!

I’m in Northern Ireland and pigs in blankets are a big thing up here. Yorkshire puddings you either love them or hate them!

Not actual Christmas dinner but my in-laws always have boiled up ham, mashed potato and peas for dinner on Christmas eve.

I had it at theirs once. Terrible

It was like some you'd give to a mass of army troops returning from service in some war-torn, freezing cold wasteland. Just pure bulk. Technically food.

It was honestly the blandest, saddest, most depressing meal I'd had all fucking year.
