I am. I really run down my chest freezer this month before defrosting so I have the room.

I really enjoy roasted veg with my salads so I par boiled carrots and parsnips, cooled rapidly and added a teaspoon of honey and whole grain mustard. Gave it a good mix and they are on trays flash freezing now before I bag them up.
I chopped carrots and shallots in my food processor and have frozen in large ice cube trays. They are a great starter for so many dishes.
we really enjoy bubble and squeak with potatoes, parsnips, carrots and sprouts so I have made little patties and they are flash freezing too. They are great for a quick dinner with sausages.

I will make some soup for lunches and try out the Dahl recipe.

What's the point in lidl asking 5p a bag, can't they just donate it all for free to the thousands in need, charities, homeless kitchens, day centres, its just a ploy to get rid of it while hoping you stock up with rverything else. .

you've just answered your own question Hmm
that's exactly the point of it for the retailers.
They hope people think 'I'll get the veg in X because they're selling it really cheap....oh and while I'm there I'll get a,b,and c, ooh and have a quick look on the off chance they've got any y and z as well....."

I'm sure the "thousands in need" could afford a 5p bag of carrots if they wanted to, what they can't afford is a cheap way of cooking them or anything to eat them with, which would be the same whether the supermarkets sold veg for 50p, 5p or gave it away for free (which they often end up doing).

I've not managed to get any yet, the shelves have been empty. As for poor people lacking the skills to cook vegetables 😱Words fail me there. Poor people are usually the most resourceful and can scratch together a meal from virtually anything.

I didn't have the room for lots so only bought 3 of each of the Tesco 15p veg. I just chop and freeze carrots , but parsnips, broccoli and sprouts need to be par boiled first. Potatoes and swede will store for a few weeks in a cool dark dry place so no need to freeze them , just check on them each week to make sure they're doing ok and not rotting away.

A smart trick (probably saving yourself 20 minutes’ work!) I saw was to make a huge batch of mashed potatoes, measure your casserole dish and draw the shape on baking paper. Freeze disks of mashed potatoes in this shape, ready to place on top of shepherds/cottage /fish pie mix in the oven.

Don’t do anything to the potatoes except remove from their plastic bags, leave out in a single layer for a few hours to dry any moisture, put in a dark pillowcase and store in a cold place. It’ll keep for well over a month.

No freezer space at the moment as full of the better then half price lamb :)

I do buy plenty of the veg though and put in the net bags and hang in the garage , they last a good couple of weeks - onions last for months

As they start to turn - soup is made

I tend not to do any food shopping until the middle of January other then bread and milk

I got 1 set from Aldi and made into a veg curry & froze for lunches in Jan. Got 3 of each from Lidl and I put carrots & potatoes in a pillowcase in a dark, cool place to use in Jan/Feb. Will make Delia’s curried parsnip soup and the brussels I shred & fry in butter with shallots to serve with pasta & blue cheese. I also make soffritto (got reduced celery in Tesco) and freeze in small batches. The veg keep for ages whole in the salad drawer.

@CosmicUnderpants thanks for the pillowcase idea. I’ve run out of leftover paper bags big enough to hold the incoming 4kg of potatoes. I do have a few spare pillowcases though.

I hope they have already paid the farmers the full rate. Selling anything this cheap is actually really bad as it gives a false impression of the true cost of production of food.
