How accurate is John Lewis stock checker?

There is an item I've been looking for for DD which I can't find anywhere but John Lewis Westfield Stratford says it has one. But just ONE. It's not possible to ring the store directly and I don't want to go there if it's actually not there.

has anyone found this data to be accurate or not?

Could you ring a different John Lewis store and ask them to ring the Westfield Stratford store? I expect they're able to call other stores internally.

Otherwise, I've always found the store checker to be accurate. Sometimes it can take a while to locate the item once you're in the store though. It might even be in their stock room, for example.

No, it’s not accurate - I would definitely find a way to ring the store before travelling there.

Made that mistake a couple of months ago - arrived to find that the item wasn’t on the shop floor or in the store room, and the sales assistant said this wasn’t unusual.

Nitgel · 21/12/2025 09:09

When ive done this the store assistants say that it is reliable.

I recently went into one shop for an item that said there was one in stock, but the sales assistants there said it wasn’t reliable once it was down to one or two items. So I would find some way to ring the store and see if they can locate it and put it aside for you first, before you go. Another shop can call that one for you if you have a different JL nearby.

It’s not reliable when it’s only showing 1 item available - that usually means it’s a display item or it’s just not available.

Hmmm yes that's my suspicion

We have a JL 10 mins away from where I live. It apparently has 1 of the item I decided would be a perfect present for DH. This 1 item has apparently been in stock in this branch since 10th Dec. I have been there 6 times and it just does not exist. The assistants in the dept now recognise me and have been keeping an eye out for it and so, as soon as I go in now, they give me an update. I still go & hunt the floor. I have also been into one other branch which apparently had one of the item and it wasn’t there either.

Or it has been nicked. Stock is only correct if it has been scanned.

I would still try though

Mydadsbirthday · 21/12/2025 11:50

I would say that when it's down to one they won't have it. I tried this at M&S last week for a tree dec I wanted. They didn't have it. I can't imagine JL systems will be any more accurate.

Clockworkfork · 30/12/2025 09:56

Ive tried two separate John Lewis stores for an item that had 1 in stock. Both stores didn't have them even though the shop assistant looked in the stock room. If there is one in stock, it's just not reliable.

Somersetbaker · 30/12/2025 11:41

There's always a chance it's been stolen and a risk it might be sold to somebody else before you get there. Be prepared to be disappointed.

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 30/12/2025 11:44

If it’s a washing machine, it’s probably there. If it’s something like a tie, then I’d be less inclined to believe it.

Sometimes the wrong things get scanned through tills or things get stolen or it’s there but JLs are big stores and it’s like finding a needle in a haystack (not unusual for a toddler to grab something and then discard it in a hidden and random place never to be seen again).

tinyspiny · 30/12/2025 11:51

It isn’t reliable . It was showing something in stock at Bluewater before Christmas and they didn’t have the item , the assistant even went to check the stock room as he agreed it was showing on his handset .

shandwichshahp · 30/12/2025 19:04

Thanks all, it was a Jellycat so I kind of suspected that it wouldn't be there.
I used to customer service WhatsApp service who checked for me too and they confirmed it wasn't in stock.
