Anyone work or know someone from a building site? Construction Industry scheme

DS has started working on a building site. He’s 17 but he’s been taken on self employed under the construction industry scheme. We have sat and made sure he’s properly registered for that etc so all ok.

Pensions will be looked at when he is 18 but right now we are considering other options such as insurance if he has an accident and can’t work so something like a broken arm or leg or other injury that takes him out for a few weeks. Is that worth looking into? Is there anything else you’d recommend for someone starting out as self employed so young? I am going to sit with him and also look at any other insurance options for a major accident too but not quite sure where to start with that.

Hi I work for a construction company and have previously been self employed for over 15 years. He needs to look in to business insurance for himself, specifically public liability insurance. I'm surprised the company has let him start without seeing it tbh. I would also look at sickness/ income replacement insurance as well. I think I used to pay about £35 a month for up to £800 benefit a month in case of long term sickness or injury. It starts to pay out after a month so might be an idea for him to keep a month's money in instant access savings just in case. Both insurances are tax deductable. There are lots of companies out there but I used hiscox for PL and Aviva for the sick pay cover.

He might be better off in the long run learning a trade at college, or doing an apprenticeship. I would seriously worry about a 17 year old DC without proper training on a building site.

He’s getting training. It’s all onsite and he will be put through the apprenticeship assessment by the company.
