Would you like to see a recipe book from 1936?

One of my lovely clients showed me this book today that belonged to her grandmother. I can't read all of the handwriting but I found it so interesting!

Its crazy to think that back then people had ration books whereas now we can walk into Tesco and choose from thousands of items.

Thank you for sharing this . I loved old cookery books and housekeeping books.

FruityFrog · 20/12/2025 18:48

I have a good housekeeping cook book from 1951 given as an Xmas gift to my grandma from my grandad. It has some very good recipes which include alternatives to rationed food or skimp on eggs, butter etc. it's very interesting and economical!

No ration books in 1936 …

I have no idea of the exact timeline, but there is paragraph in the front of the book saying 'Used by (name) and her daughter in 1936' so perhaps the book has been handed down.

I found my mums home economics book from when she was in school- I could barely make sense of it because of the different units and all the talk of different cuts of meat etc! Very cool op!

How lucky you are, OP! I love looking at things like this.

I have an elderly recipe book already. If you want recipes featuring pigeon, or ones that involve cooking for invalids, I have you covered! I've already requested- as delicately as possible- that I inherit my grandmother's cookery books, sewing box and some tiny books about bread poultices and other old-fashioned remedies (described as 'witchcraft' by some family members), when the time comes. However, I've said no to her wooden ironing board. It was a wedding present from the 1950's, and has collapsed and hit me over the head far too many times whenever I went in their hallway! It is a complete menace to society, but clearly very well-made!

Beautiful writing !

I love old recipe books especially ones specific to a particular county. I use the recipes on my menus sometimes as I cater for people on holiday who want traditional Devonshire dishes. I was so lucky when I found an old book of Devon recipes in a charity shop.

That is wonderful. For my engagement present my Dad bought me Mrs Beetons Book of Home Management. It is an eye opener. There is a segment on managing servants.

I have some really really old recipe books handed down through the family... The kind that day 'take 2 dozen eggs and a pint of brandy'. Needless to say I don't use them, but interspersed through the pages are some handwritten recipes including some written by my grandmother when she was living in North Carolina (army posting) just after the war.

It was my first thought too but the book is lovely.

It’s lovely to see old books like this, with proper handwriting. My husband and daughter both have perfect copperplate writing and I’ve always been very envious when I compare it to my dreadful writing!
