NYE - are you a fan?

SwanSong30 · 20/12/2025 18:01

I am not a fan of NYE. My perfect NYE would be to watch tv on the sofa in my pjs with a slice of Christmas cake and a cup of tea, not fussed about the bells. I really dislike forced fun and the expectations that NYE should be brilliant/wild/alcohol fuelled - fab if that’s how you like your NYE to be, it’s just not my scene.

so, are you a fan? What would your perfect NYE look like?

Not a fan

Berlinlover · 20/12/2025 19:22

I always spend it at home watching the fireworks in London on Sky News.

TiredofLDN · 20/12/2025 19:26

Have always hated NYE, even when I was a teen.
Always stayed in. Pre-DS - even at the height of my rampaging party days- I would buy a bottle of champagne and get a takeaway, and enjoy it on my own with books and a box set.
Now i have DS, we tend to stay up watching films with a curry and a couple of glasses of champagne for me, schloer for him.
don’t watch the fireworks or stay up for the bells. If we’re up anyway we say happy new year, but that’s it.

I was. Not anymore.

Such an anti climax at midnight.

I sound so miserable!

Wiglio · 20/12/2025 19:39

It’s my birthday on NYE, my present to myself is an early night 🤣
I can’t celebrate my birthday, I’m an adult so it doesn’t matter, inflated prices, struggle to get a cab home.
I just don’t bother

choccyfountain · 20/12/2025 19:52

Honestly no. I always get a sad feeling on New Year's Eve and apprehension of the year to come and leaving behind the year that has been. I'll sit on my sofa (maybe fall asleep and wake up just before midnight) stick the countdown on the telly and off to bed I go.

Cheersmedears123 · 20/12/2025 19:56

I love it! Sometimes we stay in and have lots of delicious food, play games with DS, drink a nice bottle of bubbly and watch it all on the TV. Other times we’ll go out to a party and that’s always good fun. It feels like the last hurrah before we go into January, back to work, etc.

Coffeeblanketandabookplz · 20/12/2025 20:02

I hate it and always have. Always makes me feel a weird sadness but I have no idea why? Almost gives me a homesick feeling despite being at home. My kids love it though so we don’t go to bed early. I do enjoy New Year’s Day though as it marks my sobriety and we always do a big walk

blankcanvas3 · 20/12/2025 20:11

Love it, we have a party every year and it’s always fab. The tidying up is not

Yes a homesick feeling. It always makes me feel so empty for some reason

NormasArse · 20/12/2025 21:39

If I’m at home, I just go to bed early.

My favourite NYs have been away, staying in bothies with friends. Real fire, roughing it, whisky, and looking at the stars. Usually have a swim in something cold on NYD.

This year I’m going away with my dad and my dogs. Can’t wait!

Beekman · 20/12/2025 21:39

Usually in bed by 10 on NYE. I’ve never liked it and always found it rather sad, even more so since my lovely mum died. Happy for people who love it but it’s not for me.

Livingthebestlife · 20/12/2025 21:46

I really dislike it and I don't know why. For as long back that I remember to a young child, I always have the same feeling. I've tried absolutely everything from house parties, clubs, restaurant, abroad, you name it, I just have this really deep sad feeling, it's difficult to describe the feeling, so we stay in now and it's still the same feeling but I just pretend.

I do record cnn with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen for their countdown and watch that the next night with a few drinks and really enjoy it and it feels happy and festive, probably because they are so funny.

AlwaysADramaHadEnough · 20/12/2025 21:50

Despise nye. Feel it's forced fun and we 'should' be doing something I used to fall in the trap of making plans because I felt I had to.
Now we do some thing with the dcs during the day , an event or similar. Home take away and film just us with the dcs. Then at 12 we watch the fireworks out the window.everyone here goes huge more than firework night. So can't go to bed early or we get woken.
Then bed around 1am.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 20/12/2025 22:09

Hate it makes me feel sad and miserable.
Ideally id be away or busy .

SecretWitch · 20/12/2025 23:06

I enjoy having a nice dinner, watching some movies and seeing the New Year in from the comfort of my bed. The door can’t slam fast enough on the arse of 2025

Imtornanddontknowwhattodo · 20/12/2025 23:42

I love it as it's fun and gives hope for a New Year. I've done London many times, the Thames and Trafalgar Square where everybody was chatting and up for a laugh.

Edinburgh was brilliant. I was alone and everybody was enjoying. Very friendly place.

Cardiff was very flat.

I'm going to Cromer this year. They do New Year's day fireworks.

xogossipgirlxo · 20/12/2025 23:44

Glass of prosecco at midnight and off to bed. I like waking up well rested and without hangover as I have to be a parent next day.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/12/2025 23:59

I don’t mind it. We tend to go out for a fancy lunch, then at night have party food/cheese with a nice bottle of wine. Pjs on. Our last cat was absolutely terrified of fireworks so I would always spend a good part of the time trying to comfort her. We had to have her pts early last year aged ten, and now have a fearless little boy cat who couldn’t care less.

madaboutpurple · 21/12/2025 22:55

We have picnic food, no drinks other than soft drinks as we both don't drink. DH and myself watch telly in the evening.

Newsenmum · 21/12/2025 22:57

I am exhausted after Christmas (as much as I love it) and I LOVE the idea of being all cosy and safe inside and going straight to bed.

It’s very hard not to reflect on the passing of time

EmeraldDreams73 · 21/12/2025 23:02

I hate it. Always have, though when I was younger I made an effort - but I drink very little so tended to find all the forced merriment and drunk people boring.

Many years in an abusive marriage meant that the performance of celebration was particularly painful every year. I loathe feeling (and it's every bloody year even now) that "well, that was a shit year. Let's hope next year is better". After so many times, I just get irritated.

Have had some fun nights with friends over the years when dds were smaller, but these days I'm generally being a taxi or trying to ignore it, esp as dh often has to work (NHS). I loathe January with a passion anyway, so that doesn't help!
