Just me and DH. We've both been out/ got planned separate Christmas celebrations with each of our own friends /work. I feel like having a little celebration of our own tonight.. but should we go out or stay in ?

Stay in - cheaper, easy, cosy, cheap takeaway & drinks .. but could be boring as we have watched everything on our radar and it would take more time to find a film than it would to watch it. If we stay in I'll end up going to bed early, just because I can.

Go out - more expensive (would only be drinks, no food), need to get ready (hassle as not sure I cba) but it would be Christmasy in the pub (our Christmas tree is not on our living room). It would just be us going to the pub, we can do 'just us' just as equally at home with cheaper drinks

I'm worried I might regret staying in half way through the eve. DH has left the decision to me

Thoughts?

Go out.

I'm usually all for going out and am actually going to a party tonight, but unless I was with a group, I wouldn't go to the pub the Saturday before Christmas.

Go out. You can stay home any weekend but going out for the Christmas weekend will be more fun.

TheChosenTwo · 20/12/2025 17:01

Think I’m confused, if you go out is it just the two of you going out together?
sorry, read it for the third time and I can see you said just the two of you, the mention of having separate work/friend things threw me!
I’d say go out for a couple and then home for a takeaway and a lazy Rest of the night.
Pub will feel nice and festive with hopefully a buzzy atmosphere for a bit.

Personally I’d stay in. The weather is grim here, very cold and foggy and I couldn’t be arsed with getting ready and going out in it. But I get what you’re saying about it being more of an ‘occasion’ if you go out. Could you order something special to eat, maybe buy a film on Amazon or something to make it a bit more of a date night?

If you can be bothered then go out, suspect it will be busy and expensive though.

I'd stay in but I can't be bothered with having to be in a crowded, hot, noisy pub on the last weekend before Christmas. If that's your scene then go for it but I'll be on my sofa with a bottle of wine and takeaway.

Pollqueen · 20/12/2025 17:03

Well I'm out for a meal tonight and really wish I could curl up on sofa with a take away and telly

Sanasaaa · 20/12/2025 17:04

The worst month of the year for service and good quality in the hospitality industry, and it'll be very loud and pretty much guaranteed to catch germs.

Grumblies · 20/12/2025 17:05

Stay in. It's going to be exceptionally busy most places tonight with Christmas parties added to general Saturday nights out. I would stay in, order some nice food and relax.

Forever1973 · 20/12/2025 17:11

If this is your local or regular pub, then go out - it will make a nice change and you'll have all of Christmas itself for cosy nights at home.

I wouldn't brave a city pub at this time of year - just come back from shopping in my nearest city and there were already pissed people wandering about shouting!

333FionaG · 20/12/2025 17:11

Stay in with a bottle of wine and a takeaway, play a boardgame instead of watching a film.
Pubs will be mad this close to Christmas and think of all the drunk people staggering around and the potential of slipping in vomit. Or is that just my local? 😂

InstinctD · 20/12/2025 17:19

I’d personally avoid a pub this close to Christmas, tbh you might pick up a bug (our family did last weekend and are v full of grot now 😪 but hoping it will blow over in next few days). The only way it could winkle me out was if it was a particularly nice one with a roaring fire and not heaving with ppl.
