Best safe driving tips

Just that really. I’ve seen a couple of near misses recently and it’s shaken me a bit.

I always drive within the speed limit and try to avoid distractions but I’d love to hear any experienced drivers tips to be as safe as possible, especially around cyclists.

thank you!

Always look further ahead then what’s immediately in front of you. Anticipate traffic coming out of side roads. Give cyclists plenty of space. Use your mirrors and indicators properly.

Essentially, have eyes coming out of your arse!

Keep safe distances.
Try and judge what others are going to do.
I am a stickler for indicators and hate when others don't use them.

Consult a driving instructor, not randoms on the internet. Read the Highway Code.

My driving instructor told me to assume everyone else on the road is an idiot, and they are going to do something really stupid. That advice has saved me from a few crashes over the years.

Yes, assume everyone else can't drive!

Agree that you need to look really far ahead on the road, it always amazes me that people get stuck behind obstructions in a lane that you could see with plenty of time to move. But also remember that we are all human and have off days - but that goes back to being prepared for anything to happen on the road!

Defensive driving

I was recently in an accident where the other party drove over chevrons on a single lane slip road to overtake me, and we collided when we entered the dual carriageway together. According to the claims adjuster, a court would say that I was in the wrong for not being aware that a car was approaching on my right, even though you are only supposed to drive over chevrons in an emergency.

So to add to what pp said, have eyes in the back and side of your head!

Agree with this. Mainytaining safe distances put you in a much stronger position to be able to react to any surprises.

Keep a safe distance both when driving and when stopped in traffic.

Get your tyres checked regularly.
