If you only tip your hairdresser at Christmas…

What do you give them?

I started going to a new hairdresser around May this year after having my cousin do my hair for years so I’m not sure of what to do. I want to give her a tip in a Christmas card but i have no idea how much I should give. My haircuts cost £55 and I go every 8 weeks usually.

£55 is a lot. I wouldn't tip.

Depends what you have done!

Nearly50omg · 19/12/2025 17:13

£55 for a CUT?!!!?😳😳😳😳 I wouldn’t give her anything! I’d find a hairdresser who doesn’t charge as much!

@Lemonlimonade It’s also considered very rude in other cultures (such as the US) not to tip heavily! So it goes both ways. We do have a tipping culture in this country, but less so than the US, more so than Japan it seems.

The only reason people tip in the US is because waiters & waitresses and other support staff get an extremely low ($2 per hr) salary and so rely on tips from customers.

In Europe all staff earn at least minimum wage. It makes no sense to tip wait staff or hairdressers but not all the other employees on minimum wage?!

Oh gosh I hate the whole tipping culture. Can’t people just charge what they feel happy to receive. It’s all some elaborate test I feel I will likely fail!

This. ^ Why on earth is ANYone tipping hairdressers in 2025? Confused (and waitresses and sometimes taxi drivers...)

No-one tips Julie on the checkout in Tesco, or Dan the receptionist at the Travelodge, or Louise on reception at the GP practice, or Anna the Optician, or Gemma the Dental Nurse, or Chris the mechanic who changes the tyres on your car, and does the MOT.

Why are hairdressers so special? Also waitresses? (And as I said occasionally taxi drivers....) Why are people still tipping them (in the UK?) As somone said on a similar thread the other day, for some people, it's often people giving extra money (on top of their salary) to people who earn more than them.

Batshit. 😖 It's coming across as 'oh you poor and mediocre low earner, have a fiver for a Terrys Chocolate Orange...' Sad

Just had my Christmas hair cut. It was £20 quid so I said to double it.

Disturbia81 · 19/12/2025 17:24

I never tip, can’t afford to. I pay what someone charges

You’re joking, right?!

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 19/12/2025 17:26

I tip 10% for the year in a Christmas card because I don't really use cash and am not organised enough the rest of the time.

DancingLions · 19/12/2025 17:30

I actually went to super cuts today. I don't have a "regular" hair dresser and only wanted a trim. So I really didnt care to spend £100+. I'm in London so even at super cuts it was £45 for a wash/cut/blow dry. I was going to round it up to £50 as she actually did a fantastic job, my hair looked nicer than it has going somewhere more expensive. But she said they're actually not allowed to accept tips. I'll definitely go there again.

The last time I went to a "proper" salon I spent a fortune and the guy spent the whole time telling me about all the foreign holidays he'd taken that year, about 5 or 6 it was. So I thought no I'm not tipping, hes better off than me! He then got the right hump and didn't even say bye to me. Hence why I didn't go there again!

Good for that hairdresser you now go to for not accepting tips. It's really outdated and naff in 2025 to tip hairdressers, (especially, as I said, taking into account that they sometimes earn more than the customers!) And as the guy who got the hump proved that some of them do still expect it, even if they earn much more than the customer! How about you tip me for coming mate?! Using my time to keep your business going! Good for you for not returning to that hairdresser/man who could afford 5 holidays abroad a year!

I use the hairdresser in the village I live in. £38 for cut & blow dry.. I have never tipped her or bought her an Xmas present. My sister uses the same hairdresser and tips £5 per visit, also for a cut and blow dry.

scalt · 19/12/2025 17:44

Another vote for not encouraging tipping culture.

I might change my mind when politicians stop tipping themselves with our wages, in the form of extremely generous expenses.

Beekman · 19/12/2025 17:48

I tip 25% but then I live in New York City and love my hairdresser

BernadetteJune · 19/12/2025 17:53

Only visit 4-5 times a year. It costs £65 and I give her a £10 tip. Will keep it the same at Christmas.

UxmalFan · 19/12/2025 18:01

I tip my hairdresser £5 a time. Nothing different at Christmas.

Lemonlimonade · 19/12/2025 18:20

Businesses should offer a great service to keep their customers coming back!

Customers should not pay an additional fee/tip - why are some people paying over what the agreed and often expensive fee is? I honestly don’t understand this, especially when they earn less than their hairdresser or beauty therapist?

Why? Is the £65 too low in your opinion?

Good question.

ImALargeAbsentMindedSpirit · 19/12/2025 20:03

I don’t tip through the year but do give her £20 at Christmas, it budgeted for as part of my Christmas shopping/expenses.

LavenderBlue19 · 19/12/2025 20:08

I don't tip. I go to a fancy hairdresser's and the woman I go to has more holidays than me, I'm pretty sure she's well paid. My last cut and colour cost £155. That's more than enough.

I tipped the electrician an extra £30 a couple of months ago, he did a great job and his quote seemed too low so I gave him a bit extra when I transferred payment. He messaged back to say thanks for the extra. My hairdresser and the electrician are highly skilled, the last thing I think is that they are mediocre.
