I washed a down jacket and expected it to survive?

I bought an as new Land's End down jacket from Vinted and washed it today on a 30 degree wash. The filling has clumped up in the channels and I now notice it should have been a cold wash only. I've tumbled dried it on low but it's mot getting any better. Is there anything I can do to redeem it? 😭

I have several down jackets and they are the only reason I keep my tumble dryer.
After washing on 30° they go in the dryer on a cool setting with sock balls (don’t have dryer balls so scrunch pairs of thick waking socks up together). It does take awhile but eventually they are dried and fluffy again.

Had a similar problem when washing pillows. Came out in a clump that I couldn’t untangle. They weren’t feather, though. Some synthetic thing.

MyCoralHare · 19/12/2025 20:00

Wash it again on a hand wash with a specialist down detergent. Tumble dry it gently on a long coolish cycle with tennis balls. Take it out and fluff it several times while it’s tumble drying. It should be fine.

I did my Uniqlo coat last week. Washed it and dried it for about 3 hours with 3 tennis balls and its perfect

mivona · 19/12/2025 20:22

I have washed down jackets before, and simply put a couple of tennis balls in the tumble dryer. They help stop the clumping while drying. I had the jacket for years.

QuiteOpinionatedActually · 19/12/2025 20:26

You haven’t ruined your down coat. Just dry on a delicate Cycle with tennis balls or some old trainers will do shake it out hourly. Your clumps will un clump, guaranteed.

I’ve got a down sleeping bag which I dry outside on the line (in summer usually), but it takes ages and I have to keep teasing the clumps of feathers into smaller and smaller chunks until they finally get some air into them and can fully dry.

I had to unclump my down jacket like this, but used the hairdryer at the same time. It takes a while but you can do it while you're watching TV.

@FedUpWithDilemmas your general laissez faire consumer is not interested in ethical down it’s too expensive and like I said TWICE nobody gives a f**K anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

And nobody gives a fuck about your rant

Jesswebster01 · 19/12/2025 21:33

I did this with a moncler and a montirex fixed the montirex one by changing the dry to a normal high setting and just shaking it every 14 mins or so I couldn't fix the moncler one.

Wooky073 · 19/12/2025 21:54

It will be fine. All you need to do is add some of those dryer balls or gets some tennis balls and add them to the dryer. The balls will beat the jacket in the machine which will fluff up and separate all the clumped feathers. Ive done it before many times and it works. I would recommend washing on a delicate or wool wash in future but it wont have damaged anything. It is definitely salvageable

Chinsupmeloves · 19/12/2025 22:43

I did this, hung up on a coat hanger and was fine. So relieved as now I know the cruelty behind the down I won't ever buy another one!

Stick it in the dryer with a few tennis balls to unclump!

I did this with mine. It really worked well.

DustlandFairytaleBeginning · 19/12/2025 23:07

I wash my down jacket all the time. Tennis balls in the dryer with the coat on low and then I finish with an air dry. It comes up lovely, but the dryer is a bit noisy!

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 19/12/2025 23:18

Don't buy anything with down in it. It's vile for the birds involved.

Kilofoxtrot99 · 20/12/2025 01:28

Tie the sleeves with elastic bands, put pegs along the bottom, pop a hairdryer into the neck and on a cool or warm heat fill the jacket with air. Get a wooden spoon or ruler and lightly tap all over to break up the clumps of the filling while the warm air is going in and it will separate out and resettle. Be patient and it will come good.

I agree, it’s meant to keep their babies warm. Not people

DeftGoldHedgehog · 20/12/2025 06:36

This is why I bought a Regatta coat which is warm but not actual feathers and machine washable, particularly as a I wanted a light coloured one. There was a Uniqlo one I saw that was down and cream coloured but not washable. Completely ridiculous.

Though when I did have a Land's End down coat it floofed up nicely in the tumble drier.

Freysimo · 20/12/2025 06:37

After the line and tumble drying, hang it in airing cupboard for a few days, if you've got one. Worked for me.

Well, I'll be eating turkey for Christmas.

JustMyView13 · 20/12/2025 06:51

In what might be the most unhelpful, helpful comment yet. You can buy a product which you use in the tumble dryer and it puffs it all back up. My mum made the same mistake once, all is not lost. I think we got it from a hiking shop in the end.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 20/12/2025 06:59

It’s not ruined Op. You haven’t finished the process yet. If you spend some time using your fingers to break up the clumps then back in the dryer with it. And repeat until it’s plumped up again. Known in this house as ‘the floofing’.

BeserkingTuesday · 20/12/2025 07:14

Don’t know if this will help but fur coats used to be fluffed up by beating with a cane.

Not all down is harvested like this. I visited a down farm in Iceland when on holiday and the down there was harvested from the birds nests after the chicks had fledged. The female birds use it themselves to line the nests for the chicks.
It was collected then cleaned and sold to responsible manufacturers which is why it’s so expensive. The birds lived on the farm which was on an island and roamed freely.

Ooh that must go to a clothing or bedding manufacturer and be very expensive!

Daftypants · 20/12/2025 08:22

I agree with the special dryer balls , think they’re available at Lakeland ?
Your tumble drier might also have a down setting .
I was on holiday in Sweden in a rented house , noticed the Bosch washer and separate dryer had down settings ( google translate) as was doing the laundry 🧺
And if you have an airing cupboard pop it in there , as I often end up hanging difficult to dry items in there to finish them off such as hoodies where the thicker cotton just won’t dry otherwise .

I don’t have down or feather in anything my duvets , pillows , winter coat are all synthetic and they wash up and dry easily plus I have really bad allergies .
Anyhow you’ve got the cream jacket which will go with anything you own and make a change from everyone like me who is in black / navy/ dark green 😆so once you’ve got it dry …I’d spot clean it .

LindaMcCartney · 20/12/2025 08:46

@Daftypants the Icelandic duvets are £10k each for a king size so yes, the genuinely ethical ones are beyond most peoples budgets.
