Parking fine challenge. Anyone been successful?

Enko · 18/12/2025 18:07

I got a parking fine today for £100.00 (£60.00) If I pay within 14 days of issue (issue was 9th dec)

I over stayed by 10 mins. I was in the shop with 3 elderly people 2 of them in their 90s. And we were parked in a disabled spot (still has to pay)

Is there any grounds for me to contest this? £60.00 for 10 mins seems extortionate additionally as the poat is so appaling I dont have 14 days to pay I now have 5.

I admit I stayed over and I know some will say pay up. If thats your view I acknowlwege this but I am not asking your view only if there is any chance I can win a challenge.. in this case due to the trip I was on it feels a lot.

I sent receipts and evidence of disability to the Asda car park enforcement. Got let off but shopped at Aldi a lot more instead.

Hoppinggreen · 18/12/2025 18:13

You can try but if you fail it will cost you more so if you think its worth the risk go for it. You did overstay though

ForLoveNotMoney · 18/12/2025 18:15

Send in receipts and hope for the best. It worked for me when I over ran at a retail park. I’d been for a coffee and a couple of shops and thought nothing of the 90 minute limit. It was cancelled once I’d shown I’d been on the retail park. It’s close to the town centre so I guess it’s to prevent free parking there.

In this case it was a blue badge and 3 pensioners I had with me not really a disability as such they are all 3 ok but health issues for sure and walking takes longer.

Parked at Sainsbury’s went 10 mins over. Couldn’t find a receipt to prove I had shopped there. Made them look up my nectar. They said the shop was only £45 and needed to be £70 plus to be a substantial shop. I told them to look at my monthly spend (over £700 a month), they dropped the fine.

friend had similar in same car park. She was feeding her small baby. Breastfeeding in the car, they dropped the fine.

Worth a try.

If they have a blue badge then they are disabled for the purposes of the ticket though. Just because they are disabled because they are elderly doesn't mean they aren't disabled.

I don't think you stand a chance to be honest, I am not sure under what circumstances you think they would let you off? Because you had elderly people with you?

BillieWiper · 18/12/2025 18:25

I don't drive but hoping you can get it scrapped! You don't deserve any hassle like this when you're helping people all over the place! Xx

I've appealed when
-an Asda I rarely go to was a new pay and display - sent proof I'd spent £££ in Asda, got off.

  • I'd bought a pay and display ticket but knocked it off the dash as I got out of the car. Got off
  • got sent a bus lane ticket for a place I'd never been to with a picture of a car with my reg no, same make but different colour. Got off.
DH didn't win his appeal about not paying the night tariff when he parked after 6pm, because he was totally wrong. I think you'd have a good chance with 3 elderly pensioners taking longer than average to get around the shops and back to the car, especially if you include the term "like herding disagreeable strong willed cats" somewhere in the letter.

Presumably because most shops have discretion and can choose to get it cancelled, and because if it's anything like the shops where I go, the parking is free so unless every space was full you haven't prevented anyone else shopping and therefore the store has lost nothing by you overstaying by that 10 minutes. And because you've taken up one parking space for 4 people's worth of shopping rather than 4 spaces.

ConnieHeart · 18/12/2025 18:30

Definitely speak to the manager of the store & show receipts. I've had a pc cancelled this way

Tumbler2121 · 18/12/2025 18:34

I've been refunded on parking charges twice. In each case I paid up front because I was worried about the charges going up, each time they refunded.

First was in a Lidl where you have to key in your registration at a machine on the way out. I was walking out with two large Pumpkins and the member of staff had taken the basket away; I was staggering out and last thing I thought of was paying. Wrote nicely and had refund. I still only go to that shop if I'm walking, too easy to just walk away.

The next one was Aldi, it shared a car park with my doctor's surgery. They were running late and so it was over 1.5 hours since I parked. Once again, paid up front and then wrote a nice letter. Was refunded.

Make sure you talk to the right people, one of the shops or the actual parking company. Make it clear that you were in a caring role (or whatever works for you that isn't untrue) and that it was an unfortunate oversight that should not cost you this amount of money.

Also, even if they say no, one of the most useful things I've learned in dealing with this sort of thing is don't accept no for an answer! Write again with a picture if necessary

xanthomelana · 18/12/2025 18:38

Go to the store and ask them to cancel it. I cancel them all the time for reasons that you have given. If customer services says no ask for a duty manager.

You were extremely lucky to get off from a bus lane fine because you'd never been there before! Edited to say, sorry, just realised it wasn't your car

Look up Private Parking Code of Conduct on the .gov website

It allows a 10 minute grace period if the place is run by a private parking company.

Also because private parking companies have to give you a 10 minute grace period it is part of their code of conduct

BessieSurtees · 10/03/2026 05:23

I contacted the retailer and they checked the photographs and had the fine cancelled for us. I had tried unsuccessfully to contact the parking company so asked the retail manager to intervene.

franklymydearscarlett · 10/03/2026 08:37

I always appeal parking tickets if I think I have a good reason and I usually win.

not sure why you would post the fine though, just pay it online, you can appeal online too!

I got let off multiple parking tickets when I had newborn twins and overstayed or forgot to buy the ticket etc.
