Never known it to go "off" and we've had some open for 4 years now.

It won't go off, it's alcohol. Flavour might change.

Ta guys! It’s a new experience for me!

Depends on the port apparently - it won't be as nice though after 12 months.

An open port wine's shelf life varies by type, but generally, Tawny Ports last 2-3 months, Ruby Ports 2-3 weeks, and Vintage Ports only 2-3 days, with White Ports lasting up to a month, all best stored upright in the fridge with a stopper to slow oxidation.
By Port Type:

  • Vintage Port: Extremely delicate; best within 2-3 days, up to a week, as they are meant for aging in the bottle, not after opening.
  • Late Bottled Vintage (LBV): Around 1-2 weeks, especially if unfiltered; may last longer if filtered and stored well.
  • Tawny Port: Sturdy due to barrel aging; lasts well for 2-3 months, sometimes longer (up to 6 months).
  • Ruby Port: Good for 2-3 weeks, often improving slightly the next day as it softens.
  • White Port: Lasts about 1 month, especially when refrigerated.

Should be fine the alcohol keeps it safe. It might not be as good as it was but unless you're an expert you probably wouldn't tell. Try it and see.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 18/12/2025 10:34

Vintage or crusted port no more than a week (but that will have been decanted so wouldn't stand a chance of lasting more than a couple of days in our house anyway)
Barmaid's Ruby a month or so - but tbh is usually pretty grim even on day 1.
Tawny - potentially a few months.

I'm a port snob 🤣

OrlandointheWilderness · 18/12/2025 10:39

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats it’s Taylor’s ruby so probably wouldn’t meet with approval! 😂 it’s only for a bit to go in the cranberry sauce.

mine lasts ages as I only use it to make gravy. Nobody actually drinks it in a glass in this house. 😂

Taste it. If it's vinegary or tastes like cardboard then you should bin it as it would taint the sauce.
It it tastes vaguely like port it will be fine. 😁

I always use the sediment from vintage port in Christmas gravy...
