What Kindle do I need?

I am going to buy a Kindle as DH and I are doing a lot of travelling now we are retired and books are heavy. I want to work out which one will be best. I struggle to see well if the light isn't good so the one with the best backlight is what I need.

My DD swears by the basic one but I am considering the Paperwhite or the Paperwhite Signature. Is there any real benefit to spending more?

What Kindles are you all using and what do you recommend?

Thank you @IHeartFridays and @GiantTeddyIsTired ..I want one now, even though I don't need it as I have one!
I love mine and it also fits in the pocket of the dresses I wear.

@ApolloandDaphne I think you will like it, it’s different to a book, not better. It’s harder to judge how much is left to read, despite having a percentage to follow, remembering the book title is sometimes tricky and it’s not so easy to look at diagrams or maps etc. mind you, I’m not a very advanced user. What’s great is being able to carry round many books, looking up words, changing font size etc. I haven’t cracked making notes etc.
I checked my order earlier and it says “no ads”, phew.

I've got a kindle oasis and I absolutely love it! I think you can still get them. I had an original one before, with the keyboard, but that wasn't back lit.
I subscribe to kindle unlimited and I think it's really good value as I read a lot of books!

ApolloandDaphne · 17/12/2025 21:24

If I subscribe to Kindle unlimited could DH also access this? Or do we both have to pay? Our Amazon account is currently in my name and I already have a Kindle account as I used to have one. I assume I can still access those books?

You can have your DH share your purchases, so you can buy a kindle book and he can also read it. It’s a bit fiddly to set up, deep in the manage content and devices menu, but it works well once it’s set up.

A Kobo.
Any particular reason you want a Kindle and not a Kobo?
I switched from Kindle to Kobo so I can borrow and read ebooks from the library on it. No regrets, love it.

We have a Paperwhite Signature (DH) and a Colorsoft (me). Of the two I definitely prefer the Signature, as despite being cheaper the processing speed is much better and the colour display on mine offers no added value IMO.

i have a paper white and I love it. I use Calibre to put library books on it.

Can you please explain how to do that? I don’t have a PC, just an iPad. I love my kindle but am thinking of switching to kobo just so I can borrow library books.

Alexadidzammomarryjackie · 17/12/2025 22:01

I have a bog standard one and LOVE IT. I never thought I would and resisted for years but my eyesight is v dodgy now and I love the fact I can enlarge the print enough to read without glasses on, especially when wearing sunglasses. Had it 8 months, read more in those 8 months than I had in 8 years. If I could have afforded to, I'd have got a paperwhite, but the one I have is fab and I'm not disgruntled at all with it.

As far as I know you need a computer. Sorry.

If you want to borrow library ebooks with an iPad there is usually an dedicated app that you can download.

Borrowbox is widely used, but I seem to remember that my library previously used Libby. Both work reasonably well once you get the hang of them.

PS I have an elderly Paperwhite and recently bought a Scribe. I much prefer the screen size, especially for reading magazines and cookery books, but a Paperwhite is much easier for travel.

I also recommend signing up to Bookbub (free) which is a great way to build up a library for not much money.

Thanks. I have the Libby app on my
phone but prefer the size and light from my kindle.
Bookbub is great!

I just got a Scribe. It has a backlight and a pencil, and is honestly the best e-ink notebook (it's a little larger than an exercise book - or maybe 2/3rds A4) I've had (I've had e-readers since the Sony one came out about 20 years ago at least, and tried multiple note-taking options, e-ink and ipad but they've all been slow/awkward until now), and obviously I also use it to read books.

Where it excels is things like knitting patterns, which previously i would print out and annotate, now, I just open up on the kindle and annotate there, plus I keep my shopping lists etc. and can access them through the kindle app on my phone.

It's just like when I used to use a reporters notepad to organise myself (day to day/work etc), but now I can access those notes on my phone/computer if I don't have the notepad on me right then, and I can also read books, and do (pretty good) text recognition.

I love it.

I also love my Scribe. It's brilliant to write with and I love that I can email my notes to my laptop. The back lighting is excellent for reading in bed while my husband is asleep!

I have a Kindle Oasis - it’s waterproof so I can read in the bath 😆

It also has an adjustable backlight.

I never have baths so I won't need that one!

I’ve used it in swimming pools and hot tubs too!

I previously had a paperwhite and it was fab too.
