Will I feel a right fanny wearing a mask on a flight?

I’ve got a flight on Friday and then again next week, have had the flu vaccine (private to set no other health issues context) but I’m spending Christmas with vulnerable oldies, also I really really don’t want to get ill over precious much needed leave time.

Tell me to wear a mask in the metal germ tube, and that I won’t feel like I’m the one carrying a lurgy myself.

Or is this overkill?

It’s a waste of time and you’ll look a twit.

You won't look a twit, thousands of people are in hospital with flu, planes are full of germs and people in close proximity, if you feel safer just wear one, it harms no one, people may snigger if you take it off to eat and drink but who gives a shit what others think.

Mrswhiskers87 · 16/12/2025 13:42

I flew long distance over the summer and wore masks on the planes. Didn’t think anything of it.

Coffeeishot · 16/12/2025 13:44

My dh is thinking of wearing a mask next holiday because he was so ill and it spoils the holiday.

Justinthebath · 16/12/2025 13:47

We are off to Tenerife, will be wearing FFP3 masks - last year we didn't and both caught horrible colds en route - just not worth it
Grown ups can make their own decisions - not based on what other people say.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 16/12/2025 14:03

The shopping mall was full of mask wearers last weekend. Wouldn't give it a second thought OP

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 16/12/2025 14:08

Nope, you would not be a fanny at all. I was on a flight last month, one guy was coughing and spluttering all over the plane, guess what i got?
I have never been so ill in my life.

BillieWiper · 16/12/2025 14:13

I would think that a person wearing a mask might be sick. So I guess I'd be a bit concerned to sit right next to them. But obviously I wouldn't really be able to do anything about it.

If you're wearing one and not sick be prepared to maybe need to explain it briefly to some people? Not that you should have to but if your row mates look worried etc.

I mean there's no law against flying with flu etc anyway now is there? Not that's it's advisable.

I don't know if this this is a scientifically sound suggestion, but I use Vicks First Defence before and after every flight. I fly frequently and used to always seem to get ill after a trip, but it hasn't happened since I started using it. Maybe another line of defense for you?

Yep Vicks first defence is actually great - mustn’t use it all the time but whenever I feel a cold coming on I take some at the first sign and I rarely actually have a cold. Really does help.

Bobbedhairdontcare · 16/12/2025 14:16

I flew to Crete recently and quite a few people wore masks. They didn’t get a second glance.

StudentDays · 16/12/2025 14:20

I went abroad for a week, had a lovely time. Flew home Sunday. By Tuesday night I was stricken with flu. I blame the flight. YANBU.

Growlybear83 · 16/12/2025 14:24

I would second using Vicks first defence. Although I’ve had my flu and Covid vaccinations, I have also been wearing a mask if Ive had to use public transport or in crowded areas like hospitals. I’ve just got back from the supermarket and a noticeable proportion of people has masks on.

EstherGreenwood63 · 16/12/2025 14:26

Wear the mask with pride OP. I will be wearing one long haul soon.

Nannyfannybanny · 16/12/2025 14:26

A fine particulant mask made for DIY,ie sanding lead paint,or a good surgical mask with a cotton 2 layer underneath, will help. Any public transport is a soup of germs..you have to wear it constantly,no fiddling or removing. I am fully aware masks in the main are to protect others, I was nursing over 40 years. Have done barrier, reverse barrier and isolation.

Damnloginpopup · 16/12/2025 14:27

I had a cold on holiday last month, thanks to the coughing twat say next to me. Wish I'd worn one.

Justploddingonandon · 16/12/2025 14:29

I wish I'd worn one on my last flight, as I'm pretty sure that's where I picked up this super cold/covid/flu/whatever it is from. Took ages to get over it. Only good thing, was at least I was on my way back from my holiday.

ContentedAlpaca · 16/12/2025 14:36

Probably but you do you. I would probably assume you were vulnerable somehow.

ContentedAlpaca · 16/12/2025 14:37

I would also take a bottle of sambucol. It's brilliant at knocking viruses on the head of you get in with it quickly before the virus replicates too much.

Nn9011 · 16/12/2025 14:38

I'm pretty sure one of the things they found from COVID was that the flu didn't actually spread in the planes as much as they thought it would. So as long as your washing hands, don't rely on hand sanitizer as it only works the first time you use it, you need to wash hands before using it. Maybe take some wipes and wipe the arms and table down just for extra peace of mind.

ThePoshUns · 16/12/2025 14:39

I misread the title and was wondering what a fanny mask looks like

Mumsntfan1 · 16/12/2025 14:42

I don't think anybody else on the plane will be that interested and you probably won't see them again anyway.

ArcticGrass · 16/12/2025 14:45

Quite a few people wearing masks on the last plane journey I was on, I wish I had too...I got the flu shortly aftewards.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 16/12/2025 14:46

Ive seen a few masks out and about in london x

Littlebuddh · 16/12/2025 14:49

I always have a mask in my bag.
If i go out anywhere and it's crowded I pop it on, I really dont care what others think.
I dont like wearing them either but sometimes I think it's mask time.
I dont want everyone's germs going up my nose or in my mouth, on a crowded bus or train.
Some people dont cover there mouths when they cough or sneezing.
Or them that do it with their hands then touch everything afterwards.
I carry hand sanitizer too for this reason.
As soon as I'm the front door I'm straight in the bathroom give my hands a good scrub.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 16/12/2025 14:50

I wear a mask on public transport port and anywhere indoors with large numbers of people who aren’t moving around. I don’t care what people think!

Nearly50omg · 16/12/2025 12:41

Masks protect the other people from YOU - the mask wearer!! Wearing a mask unless it’s one of the very fancy ones those of us with severe allergies wear on flights/trains etc which are hundreds of pounds then you are wasting your time and just make the people - who know what masks are for - concerned you actually are the one they should be wary of!

Seriously we had 3 years of Covid crap did people really not learn the basics about masks and who needed to wear them and why? 🤷‍♀️

Updated results show they also protect the wearer - I’ll see if I can find a link. Apart from anything else, they stop people touching their nose and mouth.
