I need some books that will make me fall in love with reading

I'm in a reading rut and really want a book (ideally the start of a series) that will make me want to read instead of waste my time scrolling on YouTube.

Books/authors I love:
Jane Austen
Harry Potter
Have read all the Strike series except the latest because I want to get the physical copy of the book
Jane Casey "Maeve Kerrigan" series - read them all and obsessed
Mitch Albom
Cecelia Ahern
LOTR

Things I don't like:
Romantic fantasy (I read the first two in the ACOTAR because my work colleagues raved about it but it just felt like teenage fanfiction to me)
Anything "spicy", not my cup of tea at all!
Jane Eyre
Wuthering Heights
Just tried "Binding Thirteen" on the suggestion of a colleague who was raving about it and again just couldn't get into it

Any suggestions very gratefully received (and even better if they are cheap/free on Kindle unlimited 😁)

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn

The Women by Kristin Hannah

I found them both unputdownable.

If you like psychological thrillers that are well written I can recommend all books by:

Belinda Bauer, Tana French and Karin Slaughter. Ruth Rendell was the greatest if them all- love all her books except the wexford series.

The Name of the Wind
The First Binding

Similar to each other but both incredible fantasy involving some schooling (going off your HP enjoyment) but definitely for adults rather than kids. Not in a sexual way they’re just complex.

Apparently there was a Jodiworld in the UK in 2023!

There have been two Jodiworld's: 2023, and 2025. And they were brilliant.

For some really good murder/police procedural books:

Cynthia Harrod Eagles : Bill Slider books
Val McDermid: Wire in the Blood series

Family sagas:
The Cazalets
A Woman of Substance
The Swann books by Delderfield

Anything by Nevile Shute but start with A Town like Alice

Ilovemyshed · 19/12/2025 21:20

Also
The Odessa File by Frederick Forsyth

Definitely Shardlake series, Rules of Civility and A Gentleman in Moscow. Still Life by Sarah Winman, The Other Bennet Sister, Dr Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths (crime series based in Norfolk), Racel McLean crime novels.

Wow, thanks so much everyone for all the suggestions!!

I just finished rereading "The Gift" by Cecelia Ahern because it's one of my favourites, had me sobbing despite the fact I know how it ends.

I decided to treat myself to the new Strike book yesterday, I'd been putting it off because of living on a budget but it's a Christmas present to myself. Finished wrapping last night so looking forward to getting stuck into that this weekend now I'm ready for Christmas.

I'm going to go through all the posts and start making a list of To Be Reads, I'm awful for getting a book (usually ones on offer on Kindle) not being able to get in to them and they go on the on the ever growing list of books I end up deleting, so I really want something that's going to get me obsessed like Strike does 😁

May I ask what ACOTAR is?
I love Marian Keyes and Diane Chamberlain

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. If you are new to her, I would start with her Throne of Glass series though as mentioned above.

I think someone has already recommended Precious Bane by Mary Webb… a wonderful book
