Customs charges for collecting a parcel

Does anyone know much about this? I live overseas and sent a parcel to my family in UK. They’ve been told they have to pay a customs charge of £8.58 and an admin charge of £8 in order to collect the parcel.

I would never have sent it if I’d known they’d have to pay this (not to mention how much it cost for me to send in the first place). Some gift when they have to pay!

I’m trying to find details online so I can check in future but all I can see refers to charges for gifts over a certain amount, which this was not. Does anyone know where I can find the info about customs charges?

thanks

I had to pay a customs charge today to pick up a present sent from the USA but there was no admin charge .

Yeah I've been stung once with that. The company said we were responsible for the taxes. How you're supposed to preempt that I don't know.

I had to pay more than that though.

Maybe transfer them the money so it doesn't cost them anything. I don't see the point in fighting customs they'll just destroy the parcel.

Yes sounds about right….I have family in Australia and Canada…they send gifts direct to us for my GDs by Amazon U.K. ….so no customs and free delivery…..win win

Customs charges have been around long before brexit. You’ve know idea where she sent it from.

Bobiverse · 15/12/2025 20:54

It’s totally normal for the receiver to pay customs fees.

Tbh I dont know why people send presents overseas unless it's to a country that is seriously devoid of shops. Is it really worth it?

If your parcel contained individually wrapped gifts named for different individuals, with each gift worth less than £39, and with a customs declaration form which individually listed each item, who it is a gift for and what it's worth, then this charge is incorrect. But it's very very easy to make a mistake on a customs form.

Thanks that’s interesting. It only contained one gift of less than £39 and I could only find stuff online about charges for items for more than £135. Will look more closely at the link pp provided as it was very late when I looked.

I’ve never had this before but admittedly it’s been a few years since I sent anything from here as I usually buy online from UK shops. This is something specific to NZ where I live so only found in the UK at huge prices which is why I sent it. So annoying.

yes I will reimburse the fees and no I’m not going to try to fight customs. I simply wanted to check the rules so I don’t get caught in future if I ever want to send something over.
