Dd changes after ovulation. Please help

My dd is autistic and adhd. She struggles with her hormones massively.

She has tried 2 types of pill and the marina coil. All have been dreadful.

She seems to be unable to cope when progesterone is at its highest or with fake progesterone. .

I'm keeping a diary and it's always after ovulation so she loses about 10 days a Month to anxiety low mood and lot of pain when period comes too.

I really want to help her and I'm planning on getting her seeing a good specialist next year We just need to keep a diary to present. The nhs have been pretty useless. Just shoving the pill or hormones at her.

Has anyone tried a really good supplement that's actually helped if they have had similar symptoms. Or can anyone recommend a doctor that understands normal alongside psychological issues.

Ps. She is already on sertraline.

Thank you.

Pmdd.

Sorry, its awful.

Peter greenhouse is reasonable and was able to alleviate my god awful symptoms by about 50% which was life changing.

Also she may have to accept she has a chronic illness and work around it a bit.

Try to limit stress and things to do in the 10 days before period.

Look up the Royal College of Gynaecologists guidelines for PMDD.

How old is she?

I had horrendous PMT in my late 30s, went to see a consultant privately after getting nowhere with the GP. I got put on progesterone and it helped instantly although I had horrendous heavy bleeding sometimes. That stopped entirely after a few months.

I take magnesium and the hormone balance gummies from starpowa.

What supplements has she already tried? And have you checked that the pills are the ones reccomended for PMDD?

Medical treatment on the NHS will focus on lifestyle change, psychological support, SSRI such as sertraline and hormones. Management has changed a lot since many GPs trained so if you’re wanting to persist with medical management (sertraline, hormones etc) it’s best to look at the guidance yourself as some regimens have better evidence than others. Continuous use of the COCP is increasingly common for example - but won’t be on every doctors radar.

on supplements NICE suggests

  • Advise that there is limited evidence to support the use of complementary treatments and dietary supplements, including reflexology, St John's wort, calcium and vitamin D, ginkgo biloba, evening primrose oil, vitamin B6, and magnesium.
  • Advise that although vitex agnus castuscurrently shows the most promise, experts advise that there is not yet enough evidence to recommend it.

These might be worth a try?

This is entirely anecdotal but I suffer really badly with PMDD and I heard (on reddit!) that a daily antihistamine can help. I've been taking one a day and this month felt much better in my luteal phase. Loratadine is the one I take.

I read on another Mumsnet thread to take ibuprofen to help with this. There was a whole explanation that I can’t fully remember. Something about lowering either the progesterone or the affect of progesterone.

Lookingforthejoy · 16/12/2025 11:15

PMDD is more common in autistic women.
