Daughter gets sick often

My 7yr old DD catches every bug possible. Just last month she was down with adenovirus, and was on steroids after she developed croup. Her health was just getting better, and now she’s been down with the flu since Wednesday night. Her temperature is a always between 104-100F. Poor child is so ill almost every winter. GP says it’s quite common in kids of her age to get ill at least 8 times a year. To reassure me the GP also got her blood tests done and everything came back perfect. My 4yr old DD2 is her complete opposite, doesn’t ever catch a cold and her fever lasts only a day or 2. I try to give both of them a balanced diet. The only problem is DD1 has sensory issues with fruits and doesn’t even touch them. I give her Sambucol daily, followed by immunity booster gummies. Nothing seems to help and I’m fed up and feel so sad seeing her poorly always. How do I improve her health? And please tell me she’s not the only kid falling ill so often.

I was like that up until my 30s. My immune system was just poor. I've no idea what changed but it's definitely better now.

There's a few things I'd do in your position:

  1. Child's vitamin daily. Is that what the gummies are?
  2. Really hammer home the importance of hand washing, especially after being out and about and when at school. This is the number 1 thing that makes a huge difference.
  3. Put hand gel in her pocket for school.
  4. Plenty of veg. Will she eat dried fruits if she don't eat fresh?
  5. Plenty of fresh air and walks
  6. Playdates outside where possible in autumn and winter, just wrap up warm.
  7. Subtly move you and her away from coughing, spluttering people without making it a big deal to her

You could even ask her teacher if she could have a back corner desk when he/she next rearranges the classroom so she's not constantly surrounded from all 4 sides. Explain about her poor immune system and I'm sure they could do this if they were rearranging anyway.

Is she an anxious child at all?

volcanica · 14/12/2025 13:00

@LookingforthejoyNot anxious at all. But a bit shy in social gatherings. She is academically very good, but these constant viral infections make her weak and she has to miss school.

Does she have veg?? Will she have fruit juice, or fruit compote?

Or maybe tinned fruit or fruit in jelly?

@canuckup@LostsoultripI give her fresh orange juice. That’s the only real fruit she has. I give her the fruit pouches from tesco but not sure if they are of any use.
