If you suddenly became the leader of the country, what’s the one thing you would change?

As the child of an elderly parent, I’m frustrated by what appears to be pointless bureaucracy when dealing with local councils. When anything goes wrong with my dad’s care, I spend the equivalent of hours (sometimes days) being passed from team to team, trying to get someone to take ownership of the issue and work with me to resolve it. If I were PM, as this is so personal, I’d tackle this straight away. I’d also do a proper, comprehensive review of the NHS and ask the tough questions, with the goal of reforming it while (at the same time) keeping it free or at least very low cost at the point of use. Obviously I’d use my magic money tree to fund all of this! 🤓

This is a semi lighthearted thread - but if you were leading the country, what would you tackle first?

On a more realistic note I would reform the NHS to one of the more European style systems.

Back I flights of fancy - I would quote like something akin to The Purge - where once a year on a set date you are allowed to legally beat the living shit out of anyone who has - in your opinion - been a cunt to you that year.

because I have an entire list.

I would make it the law that when a complaint is made against a company or organisation fobbing someone off is illegal.

Anyone saying “oh sorry never mind lessons will be leaned” while doing nothing will be fined £1 million.

If a company has ruined your house/holiday/credit rating, this will do nothing to make you feel better. The company needs to sort it out and before the story gets into the media. Only doing the right thing once Matt Allwright grills your hapless spokesperson on Watchdog isn't good enough.

I can see one of my exes arranging to spend that 24 hours in a police cell each year, rather than watch a queue form outside his house. That man could have started a fight in an empty room.

I would make it pay in benefits to have no children

I would require pet owners to have home inspections every 6 months and a license

I would have a punitive junk food tax

I would make sure that many of the people who have posted on this thread get nowhere near a ballot box again. 😉

Oh I don’t know them getting a painful financial hammering would certainly make me feel better if they haven’t done anything else.

Ideally they would do whatever it is that needs to be sorted out- if they don’t they get their arses handed to them financially.

If a company is a repeat offender the fine triples each time.

In fact scratch that - they loose their entire profit if they are a repeat offender.

incentivise getting lower socioeconomic groups into work with proper training that may have been missed in their schooling. In the same vein introduce more social workers to help out. We have whole estates around there with older teens just hanging around

Sorry, I meant the company defending themselves by talking about how most of their customers are satisfied wouldn't make those who'd been messed about feel any better. I dare say, a financial hammering would, though!

It doesn’t matter how much money you throw at our amazing NHS …. the demand outweighs the supply.
There are too many folk using (‘and abusing) it ..
That’s without the bureaucracy and middle management that comes with it.. as well as their bucks to pay for.
I was seriously unwell ( Sepsis ) and in a corridor for 15 hour before being admitted.
It was like a war zone in there and I ended up with PTSD afterwards.
It is unsustainable . That’s it.

At least you were admitted...
