Bedtime stories

Hi
not sure if this is the right place but don't really know where is!
My almost 9 year old loves me telling her stories 'from my brain' rather than reading an actual book at bedtime. She loves stories about my childhood, my mum's childhood, silly stories, funny stories about people, pets, everyday events, going on holiday, granny getting into mischief etc. The trouble is I've exhausted my brain and can't think of any others! Can anyone inspire me with any family stories that they have? Please!? I would be very grateful!

My favourite bedtime story our dad used to tell us was imagining that we were in the snowy arctic and dad was driving a sleigh pulled by arctic dogs, and we were all snuggled in in the sleigh under lots of fur blankets. He'd describe the beautiful arctic scenery. He would describe how chilly it was outside but how cozy and safe we were all snuggled up, the sound of the happy dogs playing and barking. Always made us feel so safe and cozy falling asleep!

My grandsons love stories from my head too! We have created a family with very silly names and I have them participate in the events In the stories- for example

Wee Hector McQueequeue woke up early and looked out his window - what do you think he saw?

always gets them joining in and helps move the story along.

I get DD5 to give me 3 prompts, like an object, name, an animal, a location, a food, an activity etc

She might say potatoes, James and a beach... Or jumping, unicorn and a hat.... and we make short stories from there.

You could do a d&d type approach with a dice to make decisions. So you go up the mountain or down to the river? Ah you have chosen...poorly, there lies a witch who wants to copy your homework

My son used to love this too. It’s one of my favourite memories.
We had those story cubes so he rolled those and I’d make up something based on what came up. He always fixed it so one particular cube came up which we called scary monster - who was actually just shy - and he lived at the very tiptop of a house in friendly boy’s bedroom.

That gave me a base for whatever the other cubes were and they always ended up snuggly in bed at the end.

There were times I used to wish he’d just go to sleep but now he’s 18, I miss those days!

My grandad used to tell me stories where the field at the back of our house was something different every day, so one day it would be a desert, then a sea, or space, or the gardens of a beautiful palace. So the little girl would go outside every day and discover the field had changed.

Thank you, I'd much rather read a book to be honest but for some reason she prefers my stories. She likes them to be real life stories rather than fantasy unfortunately! She did love My Naughty Little Sister stories when she was younger as they were so relatable I guess.

Could you repeat stories you've already told? My DC don't mind hearing the same stories again and again!

Foxyloxy89 · 14/12/2025 07:52

Oh yes we've had lots and lots of repeats which is why I'm struggling now!

I used to tell my DCs stories with them in it. Quite often they involved falling through a hole into a world where everyone was different.
sometimes they solved crimes - a favourite one was when someone stole the beach we used to go to, and they found the man because they spotted sand dribbling out of the back of his car. The policeman made him put it all back.

My daughter loves this too, especially stories with us and various families on different days. She also likes ‘ phone stories ‘ as she calls it. I will put in chat gpt the theme she wants, the people she wants and wallah a story, and you can keep adding it onto the next daus

My dad is an immigrant and we loved to hear stories from his childhood. So different to the childhood he was providing. It didn’t matter what the story was - it could be the tiniest detail of his life, we still found it fascinating.

My dad used to tell me one about a giant.

'' he's opening the back gate ccccrrrrrreeekkk and he's coming down the garden steps boom boom boom boom he's reached the back door...'

no wonder I had nightmares for years!!!
