When do you start eating the Christmas food?

Or “open the Christmas cupboard” as we call it in our house?

For us personally I clear space in one of the cupboards in October and I buy a few none perishables to add to it every week in the food shop including both snacks and drinks. This is firmly the Christmas cupboard and out of bounds to everyone. This helps us spread the cost out a little bit as when I pull it out before the big Christmas food shop i’m always shocked at how much I’ve managed to collect without seeing it hit the bank balance massively.

On the 19th next week I will do a “BIG” Christmas food shop, expiry dates permitting. I will probably have to top up the veg a bit closer to the day but Tesco is just down the road. I’ve just announced to the family the Christmas cupboard will be open from Saturday 20th so cheers all around. Silly tradition but something we all look forward to and have lots of snacks with a festive film. My friend is here and stated that she doesn’t allow her family to eat any Christmas food until Xmas eve.

Just wondering when you start eating the Christmas food?

We clear off one of the worktops in November, cover it with Christmas paper and start collecting Christmas treats there, then it gets decorated with tinsel and fairy lights when the rest of the decorations go up in December. By this point it’s groaning, but nobody is allowed to touch any of it until it’s declared open on Christmas Eve. We eat homemade Christmas treats all the way through December through - this week I’ve made mince pies, millionaire shortbread, cranberry and spiced orange muffins and lebkuchen. It works well, because once the “Christmas side” of goodies is open nobody cares about my homemade stuff!

Oh I love this! I don’t know what it is about the build up but I love the anticipation of being allowed to eat the food I’ve stockpiled! That’s when I know it’s officially Christmas.

We have one stash of food, and one of drink. The food one is quite dull, though, and is only really a store of carbs on which to load cheese. No temptation to dig in before the cheese gets here.

I don't have Christmas food. I just have the stuff for Christmas Day and the bits I need to add to leftovers for Boxing Day. I don't know what I fancy for NYE so will get that closer to the time.

The Christmas cupboard opens next weekend, do has been quite naughty and eaten some cheesy biscuits but has replaced them. I will declare Christmas on the evening of the 19Th

Run30 · 13/12/2025 21:13

We are empty-nesters so ‘it’s Chriiiiiiiiistmas!’ as soon as our adult children arrive home for Christmas - usually around the 21st/22nd, depending on when it falls.

Snackpocket · 13/12/2025 21:18

I made sausage rolls for Christmas last week and we eaten half of them already. Plus opened a box of quality street and 2 terrys chocolate oranges!

edwinbear · 13/12/2025 21:18

We don’t usually start until Christmas Eve, but we’ve gone early this year and ‘testing’ M&S Big Mix chocolates and they also have these amazing tins with a mix of pretzels, chocolate nuts, chocolate popcorn etc. We’re on our second one of those already.

cupfinalchaos · 13/12/2025 21:18

People do seem to go bezerk at Christmas!

Tryingatleast · 13/12/2025 21:21

We did our ‘big shop’ today as bd I’ve snuck something already!!

Crikeyalmighty · 13/12/2025 21:22

I confess we’ve had to replace the Waitrose brown butter mince pies with cognac and I opened the freebie cinnamon knots just to test they were nice - they are but I’ve put the packet back - otherwise Xmas Eve,

Hippywannabe · 13/12/2025 21:36

4pm on Xmas Eve. Any earlier and the XMAS ROW will happen.

TheCurious0range · 13/12/2025 21:38

I did have one friend who found it absolutely disgusting, she called it my “shrine to gluttony” 😆 it really does help build the excitement!

Thanks - I've just been to the corner shop which has expensive Cadbury ones in lurid 'Cadbury' purple and not very festive! I'll try Tesco next.

I bought mine on my Ocado order, so m and s. Red and gold foil wrapping. Good luck!

That sounds horrendously stressful. I hope all goes ok and you have a good Christmas.

Yes the M&S ones are good!

mismomary · 13/12/2025 22:06

Quality Street allowed out from 1st December. Already on our second box. Also sherry and port make regular appearances from 1st December. Mince pies too, and a cheese board while decorating the tree.

PegDope · 13/12/2025 22:09

Christmas Eve in our house.

However someone tested a pack of the Lidl spiced biscuits and so they had to be replaced Grin

I eat keto all year around but Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Stephen’s Day are a carbarama for me!

JudgeBread · 13/12/2025 22:11

I say this to you from my sofa, slowly working my way through a packet of brandy snaps and a box of mince pies, having just opened the first bottle of Christmas wine - whenever the feck you like.

Philandbill · 13/12/2025 22:16

Christmas cupboard is opened on Christmas Eve here. And since the Derry Girls episode it is accompanied by someone saying "They've had the very Tunnocks Mary!" in a horrified voice. 😂

HansHolbein · 13/12/2025 22:20

We’ve had a bottle of baileys, some mince pies, some chocolates, but nothing major yet.

It will all start trickling out from Monday 22nd.

mondaytosunday · 13/12/2025 22:34

I’ve ordered a few of those party platters to arrive on the 21st, but other than a box of chocolates I haven’t bought anything that I would say is reserved for Christmas - oh wait a small fruit cake as only I like it. But I won’t eat it til Christmas. My son is bringing, on the 24th after work, the turkey, pigs in blankets and a ham (all from his local butchers) for Boxing Day and we have a Tesco delivery for the 24th with everything else.

MrsSPenguins · 13/12/2025 22:57

We don't really have food that we reserve for Christmas once its in the house. Mince pies start getting in October, we have had several Christmas puddings and cream already, we got a Christmas order from the bakers first week of December with mince pies, Christmas cake, macarons, brownies which was eaten that week. Gingerbread men past couple of months. On 24th we will collect things for the Christmas meal and also more cakes from the bakers and have an order for 22nd with things in. Currently have a panettone.
