Would adhd meds help ??

I’m on a waiting list to be assessed for adhd but I’ve just found out that they are not assessing adults at the moment. I am on anti depressants to help with mood but they only help a bit. Would adhd meds help more? Because then I might consider going private but if it’s just going to be the same then I will save the money.

Going private isn’t the speedy route that you think. You might get an assessment quickly but could still be waiting months for medication.

You will then have to budget to pay for the medication and reviews long term too as most GPs (certainly in our area) will no longer share care will private providers and will refuse to prescribe

My friend says ADHD medication has changed her life, she went private, one thing I would say is she’s received a much more tailored experience going private than my experience with the NHS. They have accounted for her hormones, cycles etc (she has PMDD- now much better managed as a result). She doesn’t even take anti depressants any more.

If it was me, I’d absolutely try private (assuming you are comfortable with the ongoing costs). You could also try NHS right to choose, which should be quicker, but at the moment still quite a wait.

Yes I know. But they are not assessing any adults in my area at the moment. I’m exhausted with the highs and lows and they keep changing anti depressants or upping the dose but they don’t really work. Just wondered if it was worth trying the adhd meds or not. If people had found some relief on them.

I am in Scotland so don’t get right to choose. I was told that the waiting list was 18 months but that’s been and gone. Then last week there was an article in the paper saying no one had been assessed for four years and they had stopped dealing with adults. I wasn’t keen on private as I assumed NHS would be better so interesting to hear about your friend.

They transformed my DD’s mood and anxiety.

However after a while she became more tolerant to them so is now on Sertraline as well.

It took 2 months with a private pysch who isn’t in one of the big chains.

@smalldogdancingI suppose with private it’s finding a clinic that is recommended, probably a lot more variety in the quality of service depending on the kind of help you’re looking for exactly? My experience has been a bit “here try these off you go”, but my friend’s was much better private.

If you do find you have ADHD they might help, they might not. They're not a magic bullet, and some people can't tolerate stimulants, or don't find non stimulants that helpful, but they can calm the noise. It's really personal though, so nobody here can really say if they'll help you unfortunately.

I went right to choose recently and it only took 14 weeks from forms to meds. Some are quicker than others.

I am on drugs for Audhd it has been transformative in my life

smalldogdancing · 13/12/2025 09:20

Yes I guess I am just quite tired of struggling and there’s always the dream of the magic solution isn’t there. I just want to feel better. The anti depressants have moved the needle a bit but I still struggle with this horrible crashing low feeling unless I do something intense to get me out of it but then I just become over excited and annoying and I can’t sustain it anyway. I just hate the way I feel. Having said that I am sort of functional so it could be worse. And maybe it’s not even adhd.

A relative chose right to choose had a very quick appt diagnosed with ADHD but has to wait 9 months for the medication. He had an ECG blood tests then told funding for medication won’t be available for 9 months. What is the point of that just a private company making a lot of money. The appt is a video call paid for by the NHS.To buy the medication it is very expensive is not possible being a private prescription. Good luck.

chipsandpeas · 13/12/2025 09:39

im in scotland and went private last year to get diagnosed, took a few months waiting for the appointment
i started medication a few weeks after and now on a stable dose

i was on HRT and anti depressants before diagnosis but once i started taking the meds i felt so much better, im more productive and have got back my life i suppose, as i have started to understand how ADHD has affected me

pm me if you want any more info/costs etc

I take dexamfetamine for my ADHD. I still remember the first day I took them. It reminded me of walking out of a nightclub into a calm, quiet night away from the music and shouting. It was amazing.

I've been titrated up recently and had the same experience as I had got used to the lower dose.
