What's special about Whistler, it's a ski resort. No shortage of those in Europe

OK then what's the nicest ski resort you know in Europe, after something a bit lux with really nice views and maybe a spa

Most of the ski resorts will have those. Bad Hofgastein in Austria has thermal spas, which make it a bit unusual. The Swiss resorts are very lovely, luxury and expensive, I've always fancied Wengen. Its car free and extremely pretty.

Saalbach/ Hinterglemm but I would say it’s not cheap! Depends on the season a bit I guess but in many ways quite similar. What’s the appeal of whistler? I have been there in the summer and it’s very like European ski resorts

Any of the big ones but poss more expensive than Whistler. Others who ski will have recommendations
Verbier/Davos/St.Moritz/Courchevel 1850/Megeve are some of the monied ones
Actual skiing prob worth a search. Whistler is 2200 metres. Val Thorens is that high. But you find deluxe anywhere some more than others esp if Russian money is involved. Hotel or chalet? Ski in/out? Good apres ski or a quiet night in? Italy/France/Austria/Switzerland? Zermatt is car free and you have the Matterhorn. These days I don't associate cheap and skiing together. It's a curve that goes from expensive to if you have to ask you can't afford it

Courchevel is quite fancy. I lucked out there booking last minute one year.
I liked Kitzbuhel too but the snow wasn't great the year we went. The town is very pretty though.
Never been to Whistler but know Banff and Lake Louise a bit and would go back to both in a shot if funds allowed.
What standard of skiing are you wanting?

JDM625 · 12/12/2025 21:08

What level of skiier are you?
I've never been to whistler, but I assume its wide open runs rather than pine tree lined off piste- might be wrong? Ski in/ski out or happy to get a bus/gondola to the slopes? Do you want a resort where you can trave to another resort or even another country within the day? Is the spa/hotel more important than the skiing?

I always return to Italy. Great food, friendly people and great skiing. Will make recommendations when I know more about your requirements.

The main difference between Whistler and European ski resorts for me is that the expectation in Whistler is that people will ski anywhere within the ski area boundaries - not just on the pistes - so the pisteurs check the whole mountain and will rescue you from anywhere within the boundary without quibbling over whether you’re on/off piste. The only place in Europe which I’ve found to be comparable is Ste Foy, which has huge free ride areas and a general expectation that people will not stick to the pistes on the resort side of the mountain.

We have skied whistler a few times and also a lot of Europe. Whistler is big, but not nearly as big as 3 vallees or tignes / valdesere. If you want character and trees then saalbach is good and not too expensive or Zermatt is really fabulous if you can afford it. Snow in Europe is good this year, but Whistler is looking pretty bare.
