Keeping an item sent in error.....

That the company fails to collect. I ordered a white goods item a couple of weeks ago from Amazon and they delivered the wrong item. Despite contacting them and arranging 3 times for it to be collected, they failed to show. On one occasion they actually said 'Item was not ready for collection' when they didn't even knock on my door! 'Eventually,an Amazon customer service advisor said that I was entitled to keep it as I had done everything right in trying to get them to collect it, said the collection company was in the wrong.
The whole episode has been a total shit show from start to finish,I won't go into the details as it would take too long. Suffice to say I am pleased that I am getting some sort of compensation for all the aggro and stress they've caused me over the last 2 weeks. I think I must have phoned Amazon about 40 times in the last 2 weeks, not helped by being repeatedly cut off mid call. Do they do this on purpose?!
Anyway,my question is,has anyone else ever been given this advice? What was the outcome? I'm just a bit worried about any comeback,or that I'll suddenly be charged for the item.

I’ve been told to keep items sent in error before, absolutely nothing happens other than you have a freebie. They must recoup it on their insurance. Stop stressing.

I once got sent two coats when I only ordered one. They just told me to keep the second one which was ideal as I’d been debating between two colours and now have one in navy blue and one in khaki (the other colour I’d been considering)

I got sent two brand new colour printers instead of one a couple of years ago! Immediately rang them to arrange return of one of them - they told us to keep them both. I was flabbergasted.

I got sent two sofas instead of one. They said to keep it as the bother of arranging a courier was too much!

I was once accidentally sent a box of 24 books from some book subscription company. My address but not my name. I tried to arrange for them to pick it up twice. In the end I gave up and kept the books. This was years ago...yay free books.

Thank you for all your responses. I feel somewhat reassured now. I'm amazed at the things that you have been told to keep! A sofa!! A colour printer?! Wow. I must admit I was half expecting to be told that I should not attempt to keep the item and that I should continue to pester them to collect it! I was getting fed up with waiting all day X 3 for a non-existent collection!

I’ve been told to keep two things in the past: a cat tree which I wanted to return because it was faulty, but it was too large to be able to package and send back easily (they still sent me a new one at no additional cost), and an item which was personalised with my daughter’s name but they’d misspelled the name (I think I got a refund for that). So in both cases, the items were totally useless to me!

I once kept some lovely make up that my neighbour had put the wrong house number on. I recognised the name, but just days before she had gone absolutely mental at me for taking one of her parcels in when she wasn't home, touching it, putting it in my house, and entering her drive to give it back 😵‍💫 so I left it on the side for months then had a peek. I mean, I didn't want to upset her again 🙊

Don’t bother contacting them any more but keep it boxed up for a while in case they do send a courier. After a couple of months consider it yours.

This happened to me a couple of days ago. Ordered a book from Amazon. It was £6. They sent me the complete set of 5 books. It's £40. I'll see if they say anything.

Edited

This is what I am going to do.

Yes they often don't collect because not worth it

You don't need to chase like that next time, if they don't come they don't

Just beware as you often save card details on Amazon .

im sure I was charged for a book twice last year after a mix up with a return..

I doubt they will look at it twice but I don’t want you to suddenly be in a mess before Christmas because they have charged you twice !

amazon live by their own rules !
