Visiting the same place for holiday (in Europe)

Do you ever do this (especially for the short trips to Europe)?

I've been around a fair bit in Europe but recently (for some reason) I've started thinking about Paris again! I've been before and enjoyed it. There are a few places I've yet to see. But I've been thinking about it a lot.

However that's from the heart. My brain tells me to go to cities/places I've never been to before. I've never been to Italy, Australia, Germany or the Czech Republic. If I were to go France again my head is telling me to go to Nice, Lyon or Toulouse.

I don't often go back to the same place for holidays. There's a whole lot of the world i haven't seen yet so I enjoy visiting new places, both at home and abroad. But there are places I've visited more than once, and those that I have only been to once and would like to return to. Especially if you only go for a short break, you can't see everything in a place, particularly not a huge city like Paris, so if you want to return, why not? I wouldn't want to go back to the same place every year like some people do, but you can visit the same location more than once and have very different experiences so if Paris is calling to you, I'd go.
My equivalent is Berlin. I tagged along when my DH was on a business trip a few years ago. I had pretty low expectations, in fact I didn't really want to go. But I loved it and there's loads I didn't see so I am keen to go back. With DH, it's Stockholm. He's been for work several times but wants to go again and see it properly.

I'm so tempted to go on the train and just hop over to Paris

I couldn’t begin to tell you the number of times I’ve been to Paris. I’ve also gone to Rome, Madrid, Berlin, New York, Boston, Venice and other places several times.

I love going back to the same place. You can really relax and not have to think about finding your way around, doing everything etc. You can just enjoy being somewhere you love. I aim for two trips a year (sometimes just a weekend), one to one of my three favourite locations and a new destination.

I can’t wait to go back to Rome again
So many hidden gems that I didn’t get to see last time .
I think you should go for it .

Yes of course. I love visiting new places but I also enjoy going back to cities I’ve visited if I really enjoyed them. I like doing a slower exploration on later visits, strolling more and enjoying things that are a bit more off the main areas that I didn’t get to see the first time.

We go to the same places all the time. I love how familiar we are with them and just know where to go, what we like etc. Makes for a very relaxing holiday.

I've been dreaming (yes really) about having pastries and hot chocolate in Paris.

If you have the time and can afford it what's stopping you? For me, it adds a full day either side of a trip to travel to either London for the train or the South coast for a ferry and I try not to fly frequently so short trips aren't always practical, but it sounds like a much easier trip for you. As long as you're not putting yourself into debt or going without something important, I'd go! Travel is a good use of free time and disposable in my opinion.

Bjorkdidit · 12/12/2025 10:35

Yes of course. Most places have lots of different things to see and do and the list often keeps growing the more you go. We must have been to Andalucia 50 times and have barely scratched the surface of places to visit. Plus then there's all the other places in Spain, let alone other countries.

I'd rather properly experience places and get to know them, rather than visit lots of different places but only have a fleeting interaction with the most touristy parts, as if ticking them off a list.

timetogetlost · 12/12/2025 10:57

Absolutely. I have been to Paris 5 times, Barcelona 4 times, Venice 3 times, Madrid 3 times, Munich twice, Aix-en-Provence twice, Nice twice etc. I love visiting new places, but I really love getting to know a place too. I don't think if you have been once you can just tick it off. You will see new things, places change over time, and even if you see the same stuff, you will know it better.

I went to the same place on holiday for 10 years in a row as loved it so much! I did have a longer haul holiday each year though and went to different places each time. I could afford it back then…
