Washing baby clothes that smell of cigarette smoke?

Bought a handmade item from Etsy, it smells of cigarette smoke. If I was it is it safe to use on my baby or will the cigarette toxins hang around? I’ve washed and tumbled it twice and can still smell it.

I was just told at an antenatal session that cigarette smoke on clothes is like your baby is smoking. If you can smell it, it's probably not safe. Look up methods for removing the smell, and avoid heat as that can set odours.

Bin it and complain to Etsy.

Soak and agitate in bicarb in water. Rinse in vinegar water. Dry outside.

Or. Perhaps give it a mini strip wash. Read this first www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/cleaning/a33588329/laundry-stripping/

Nah that's rank OP
I wouldn't be dressing my little baby in those .
Can you make a formal Complaint ? I only ask as I have not used Etsy.

I wouldn’t have accepted them and would have requested to return them.

If buying secondhand on Vinted / eBay then it’s a risk you take (and you can usually get the smell out by soaking in white vinegar and cold water before washing), but it’s totally unacceptable for new handmade clothes to arrive stinking of smoke. Yuk!

I bought a pair of trainer which smelt once and I could never get the smell out even with the washing machine. I’d complain.

I mean it’s disgusting for sure but it wouldn’t be the same as your baby smoking when it’s been washed!!

Wash them and hang outside for a bit. Even if they don’t dry, they’ll freshen up.

Honestly I’d just bin and see if you can get your money back via Etsy. If not chalk up to one of those things. Personally I’d never buy second hand stuff online because of the risk of smells or stains- hand me downs from friends/family I’m always delighted to get, charity shop even if you have good kids one in your area but otherwise just get new at the supermarket if you don’t want to spend a lot.

I’d look at the returns policy & leave a review warning other potential buyers.
