What are these spots? DS (2)

DS has had a snotty cold for a few weeks and a short lived sick bug over the weekend which he recovered from within about 24 hours. He’s woken up this morning with these spots - he started with a bad one in the corner of his mouth a couple of days ago which we thought was a cold sore or impetigo. Then spread to his hands and we thought HFM. But now they’re all over! He’s well in himself, but still snotty.

Pic of the back of his leg but they’re like this all over pretty much and worse on his face (bigger).

He’s had the MMR and we also had him privately vaccinated against chickenpox.

Check to see if the spots blanch when putting a glass on them - if not call 111. It could still be chickenpox despite vaccination, some people don't become fully immune to it.

I agree with @sometimesitrainshere Chicken Pox would be my first thought just from that photo.

If you had plans to go anywhere or see anyone at Christmas, I’d be preparing for the possibility that it won’t be happening.

I would say chicken pox too. Can you take him the chemist? Mine are pretty good with Minor ailments

Wbeezer · 11/12/2025 10:05

My DS3 managed to have chickenpox twice so I wouldn’t be surprised if the vaccination isn’t 100% protective. Probably have a milder case than he would have otherwise and if it’s starting now might not be infectious by Xmas ( I can’t remember the advice off the top of my head).

OrangeSlices998 · 11/12/2025 10:06

When my eldest got hand foot and mouth the first time the spots were everywhere, worse around her mouth but they were all over her arms and legs. Same with my middle one, the first time they got it it was horrendous. Both times we thought it was chicken pox it was that bad! Spots weren’t the same and they then did go onto get chicken pox later.

Could see the pharmacist?

MotherJessAndKittens · 11/12/2025 10:06

Looks like chickenpox to me too. Look up NHS guidelines for this. In case it is he shouldn’t be in contact with people till they crust over.

FedUpToTheBackTooth · 11/12/2025 10:09

How does his tongue look? Could it be scarlet fever?

Whatarethesespots · 11/12/2025 10:10

Thanks all. It says 2% of vaccinated children can catch chickenpox albeit a milder form. No plans to see anyone apart from grandparents over Xmas and they’ve had it as kids so aren’t worried. Will take him to the pharmacist this afternoon and see if there’s anything she can prescribe to keep the sores clean. Thanks all

I just had a look and he does have strawberry tongue. But no fever, totally well in himself at the moment and the rash is much more individual spots rather than a ‘spotty rash’ - no sandpaper texture etc

Oh and he had a classic case of scarlet fever in the spring. He’s also had HFM before!
