Leaving Christmas cake to cool overnight?

manywanderings · 10/12/2025 16:34

My Christmas cake will come out of the oven about 9pm. They can take a while to cool ......... just wondering if I can leave it cooling overnight or whether to wrap it in foil while it's cooling.

I'd leave it to cool before wrapping it otherwise the steam will make it soggy.

Leave to cool with a clean tea towel covering it.

Let the oven cool and put the cake back in overnight

Leave it to cool and don't cover it with anything. Trust me, I make 30 a year. It just needs to cool down properly.

Leave it to cool - either in the oven (once it's cooled down) or the microwave (and stick a note on whichever appliance you use so it doesn't accidentally get switched on!) If your house is pet/kid free you'd probably get away with leaving it out, covered with a clean tea towel. Definitely don't wrap it warm!

Wrapping it in foil will slow down the cooling, because foil keeps heat in. It insulates.

It’s fine to leave it out to cool overnight and the coolest place you could find will be good

Thank you! Think I’ll just leave it out with a tea towel over it. It’s a recipe I’ve made many times which can be made a week before Christnas. Another question - I think I may have too much mixture in my 7” deep tin (it’s about to go in the oven). Previous years U just made a small one in a 6 inch deep tin and always had some leftover. So thought it would be fine for a 7” deep tin. But it’s almost full to the top of the tin (about 1cm below height of tin). Can’t remember how deep it should be!

Christmas cake doesn’t really rise, it might be tight but you should be ok.

leave it on the side overnight with just a cloth draped over it. When it’s cool wrap it in grease proof paper and then a cloth, never use tinfoil it will make the cake sweat even when it’s cold, keeps much better in paper

I took a spoonful out anyway 😊. I know it doesn’t rise - I was just concerned if it was too deep it might be difficult to cook right through.

Wow, 30 a year. Assuming you are a professional and not just a huge fan of Christmas cake?! 😅
