I'm so upset. He slipped on a wet floor and knocked his tooth out on the sink. His other front tooth is chipped. Does anyone have any experience with this? I am absolutely devastated, can't stop crying even though I know he'll be ok really I'm just in shock. We have the dentist this afternoon. He's in shock too, won't let us clean the blood off his mouth, won't have a drink or anything. It's stopped bleeding now. What the hell do I do?! Tooth is lost, probably swallowed...

Yes it is a milk tooth luckily, just so traumatic for everyone!

It's only traumatic if you let it be traumatic. These sorts of things happen so don't cry or be over the top with him. He'll break a wrist at some point, get into scrapes, fail exams etc etc. Good time to learn that accidents happen and things move on.

Not everyone is as cut and dry as this unfortunately. I've not made a big deal to him but he was very traumatised and is in shock due to smashing his face off a sink and losing a tooth. I think that's ok for a 4 year old! Injuries are common but we can still be upset about them. I am a very empathetic person and he is my baby boy who has a horrible injury.

DD had an accident when she was two, literally ripping out four teeth (but not well enough, they were left hanging and bleeding), she had blood all down her front. Unfortunately, it was a hospital job in our situation and she had to wait until the after for an operation. I was in hospital with her, but I tried to carry on as normal as possible, ie playing with her, looking at books, chilling out if she wanted quiet time.

Moving forward, she's 24 now. Has her adult teeth now, no problems and it's s story to tell. I get you're both in shock though. It's not very nice to experience.

I knocked out a baby tooth at the front and had a “s’ghetti hole” for a few years (I was about 2 when I did mine), and have a proper set of adult teeth in the same spot now.

I'm not trying to minimise it but equally I think showing and teaching resilience is one of the most important things a parent can do.
