Amazon won't accept my name , what do I do

DeanStockwell · 08/12/2025 10:27

Well not actually my name but the name of the recipient.

In the past I have had no problems sending amazon packages to other people, however in this case it keeps telling me not to use titles like Mr Mrs but I am not.
The recipient has a three letter 1st name and a two letter 2nd name so Amazon seems to think I am using a title.
I have tried swaping the names round but that didn't work

Unfortunately I do not know the person I am sending the parcel to so I can't ask them what they normally do about it.
I have tried putting my own name as well as theirs in the box but it still won't accept it.

Has anyone had this issue? How did you solve it ?

You know that.
I know that.
But the people that released the Amazon web form will refer to it as "AI" assisted. Because otherwise they aren't at the forefront of retailer experience delivery systems.

And ultimately it matters not a shit if it is "AI", AI or not. It still prevented a real world interaction from proceeding normally.

Buttle/Tuttle.

Just wondering, why do you write Buttle Tuttle at the end of your posts? Is it a name thing or an AI thing? (Not being smart, sorry if it comes across that way!)

SerendipityJane · 08/12/2025 15:32

If you want a treat (depending on what you like) watch the documentary "Brazil" by Terry Gilliam ...

DeanStockwell · 08/12/2025 15:55

Ooh I like Terry , I will give that a go thanks .

It isn't, as alleged by the poster who recommended it, a documentary. Just like the web form isn't AI.

I think anyone who recognises the name Terry Gilliam would know what they are letting themselves in for.

I didn't claim the web form was "AI" by the way. You inferred that. What I was doing was suggesting that web forms and software built with "AI" will exhibit this sort of arsehole behaviour.

Having had to trawl a 3-hours Copilot session recently, I may be a tad jaded.

All AI involves sets of rules.

All sets of rules do NOT involve AI.

The OP's problem is, as @Kimura has pointed out, a set of rules that do not constitute AI - precisely because the computer system ISN'T learning anything. There is only one reason that Amazon's systems think a name can't be a three letter first name and a two letter surname, and that is because a human being wrote the software that way and the software is incapable of learning from what people are inputting into the form.

If the system was artificially intelligent, it would learn from what was being inputted by users and would eventually deduce that some people have short names, and it would adapt its requirements on that basis. AI is when a computer is able to perceive things and make changes / solve problems based on what it 'learns' - that isn't what a form with preset input requirements does at all.

I loathe the use of AI for a lot of things, personally - it's likely to put me out of a job in the next five to ten years. So no, I haven't 'believed the hype' at all. But I do know what the difference between AI and a web form.

AI doesn't always involve machine learning. AI can involve systems that pick the best answer based on the words used in a question for example. It won't learn if it gets it right or wrong. It just goes on picking the best answer it can give based on what it's been programmed to look for.

I know because DS used minimax in his comp sci NEA to make a game when he was doing his A-levels. It's AI at it's simplest but is actually really interesting even to someone who can't program anything. I didn't realise it was AI either beforehand but it turns out it is.

You can't have "AI" until you know what the "I" actually is.

Which we don't.

We have things that try to look like - mimic - "I". In some areas so well they surpass our "I". However applied to any generic situation and they fail spectacularly.

The only reason anyone is talking about AI is because you brought it up when you responded with...

Thank god for "AI", eh ?

...and your condescending little 'Don't tell me you've swallowed the hype?" comment.

Now you're in the slightly cringe position of having been corrected by multiple people, suddenly it 'matters not a shit if it is "AI", AI or not.'

Oof.

I once had to fix software that refused to accept "O'[email protected]" as an email address.

If it makes you feel better OP, a large accommodation website (where you stay in private homes or B&Bs) refuses to acknowledge my face. I was told repeatedly that my current face doesn't match my profile photo, eventually I managed to communicate with a human (online chat, not oral language God forbid) and was told they can't override the system. I was basically asking for them to look at my face and verify who I am. But the computer said no and continued to, I can't do business with them anymore. I despair.

It is this whole thing 'computer said no' that's the issue isn't it.
Whether it is AI or not there is no way of overriding it without changing the information that you have to put in.

My surname is the same as the district that I lived .
Almost ever time I fill in a form on line or in person I get told I have put the same info in two boxes so one must be wrong .

My mum's name sounds a bit like Julie/ Jodie.

When setting up an account with British Gas after she moved to the UK, the call handler misheard her accent and recorded her as Juicy.

As in, Juicy McGrath.

Subsequently, British Gas refused to change it "as that is the name on your account".

So it is not just the tech... humans are quite capable of this too.

My friend had this!!!!

Julie Brighton
Brighton Road

Brighton
BHX XXX

(Not real names, obvs)

The amount of trouble she had!! Even with local companies!

blackheartsgirl · 10/12/2025 13:19

I had to have a new Facebook account once and it wouldn’t accept my surname as it’s a major capital city. It was ridiculous as the surname goes back 1000 years and generations carry the surname.

I Had to get married and use my dhs name instead!

I’ve had quite a few issues with my maiden name in the past. It’s very frustrating.

Good lord I think I'd move or change my name , it was bad enough having two matching , three would be a nightmare!
