Treclin leaving skin so sore, what would calm it down?

I feel so bad for DD17.

Her skin has really broken out this year and her spots were really getting her down. She tried so many over the counter products but nothing helped so a few weeks ago she sent pictures on the GP app and the nurse prescribed Treclin gel. She started a week ago but sadly it has made everything so much worse, it's now so sore.

A quick Google says this product can cause a purge and it should settle within a few weeks but DD is so upset. She says it feels so sore and raw too. It's also really dry so she can't even put make up on to cover it. She doesn't want to go out now.

She doesn't want to continue with the product but what can we go get today to help calm the redness and rawness.

I've added some photos to show how sore it is.

Poor thing. My go to is always CICAPLAST BALM B5+ SOOTHING THERAPEUTIC MULTI-PURPOSE CREAM (sorry, pasted that from website!). Very soothing, should take the angry out of it fairly quickly. Should be able to find it in boots.

Thank you, I'll look out for that.

The skin barrier is being destroyed. Stop use until it calms down and in the mean time only use a very gentle cleanser like cetaphil, a hylauronic/azelaic acid serum, and a barrier repairing cream such as La Roche Posay double repair matte.

Be careful using hylauronic acids in winter - it’s essential you lock in moisture with a good cream for the acid to draw upon, otherwise the acids will draw water from deeper down in the skin.

Also, I’m not convinced that she hasn’t got acne rosacea. Can you get a dermatologist to take a look? Because it needs treating very differently to acne.

Thanks Fiftyandme

I'll get some Cetaphil. I do wonder if there is something else going on other than just acne. DD had Perioral Dermatitis a few years ago, wonder if that's flared up again?

Sadly, I can't afford to take her to a private dermatologist. GP isn't helpful, they won't even see her face to face they just ask for pics via their app and new prescribe accordingly.

I was plagued by peri oral dermatitis years ago and plagued by what I thought was just acne. My skin was reactive to exercise, heat abd sweat, and reactive to cold - turns out it was acne rosacea all along.

Id read up on it and on fair skins and the skin barrier and try treating the skin as if it has a very weak skin barrier and see what happens. This doesn’t mean she can’t use retinoids - they can be very helpful - but the key is skin barrier protection and cautious, gradual application.

Alsi, if it is acne rosacea she may benefit from application of ivermectin cream (don’t be put off by the fact that it’s a livestock and horse wormer in higher doeses and preparations) Many fair skinned people who have reactive skin often have a higher level of dermadex mites which keep the skin on the edge of an inflammation flare.

Thanks. I will have a good read up on acne rosacea.
