Hi

I know this may not be what Christmas is all about but costs are rising and I have always kept to a bit of a mental budget for presents so this is what I usually do..

Fully braced for someone to tell me not to be so mercenary..

Normally I spend about £90 or £100 on husband, unless it's a year when I splash out on any particular bigger thing..this year hardly any ideas. But he's taken up golf and found a jacket he said could be from me for Xmas - £65. So do you think I take £65:as the full cost out of £100, or do I say it equatea to a tad less because he already knows about it ?.

I don't need precise estimates just a general view on it.

For info we always tell each other not to go overboard. Married over 30 years and buy ourselves whatever we want. Got 3 kids and their partners who we also buy for so Xmas isn't cheap..

Many thanks

What? No the price is the price regardless. How can you put a price on him knowing what it is

TheChosenTwo · 05/12/2025 08:14

Yes this is mercenary.
if that’s all he wants just get that. But not because he knows about it - I really don’t get your views surrounding that, sorry!

I'd buy something else to top it up as a surprise. IF and only if I had an idea in the budget range. I definitely would not buy something for the sake of it!

Surely you can pick out something else as a surprise to go with it?

SoScarletItWas · 05/12/2025 08:16

I’d top it up to the amount you usually spend so that there’s a surprise. Maybe some golf gloves from the same brand as the jacket, or consumables like balls or tees.

LavenderBlue19 · 05/12/2025 08:18

Eh? You get the jacket and then one or two other things of around £40 value... although the idea of being so prescriptive about the cost of Christmas presents when you've been together so long is very odd.

Liz1tummypain · 05/12/2025 08:18

To add. Will defo be topping up.. He's an avid reader and I could probably find quite a few books he likes . His presents have always been a surprise til this year.

I agree with pp, if your husband only wants the jacket for £65 then just get that. No point buying other stuff just for the sake of it.

Me and my husband have been married for over 35 years and some years we do presents other years we don't. Sometimes we might just buy something for the house that we'd like. A few years ago we bought a larger TV that we both liked.

I think you have to stick to your original budget however measly the Christmas stash of presents looks .

The jacket isn’t any cheaper just because he knows about it. This is bonkers logic.

How lovely, enjoy your two dogs. Hard work but worth it. Are they rescues?

Liz1tummypain · 05/12/2025 12:46

@2dogsandabudgie thanks 🙏. yes both rescues..one was racing up until a few weeks ago. Awful timing really as kids all coming back in a few weeks. Frantically buying dog beds, leads, water bowls etc. we got rid of everything after our last dog was put to sleep due to kidney disease...But still v excited. I go to sleep thinking about how lovely its going to be.
